Car Snack – His & Hers

Sunday, April 12th 2015

For our little jaunt down the highway today, DLove and I each pack snacks for the very *survival* of the children during the journey.

Mine look like this:

Snack Bag

Snack Bag

Lots of teeny tiny tupperware-like containers, including the clever “Snack Box Buffet” you see here, all filled with myriad sweet or savory non-perishable items.  I also always stock water in the car.  A friend recently told me that Capricorns often display quirky preparatory survivalist habits.  Guilty!  (I also carry much of our camping gear and emergency canned food rations deep in the way back, just in case we… get stranded on an island or something, in our car.  I don’t know.)

Fortunately my husband is not like that.  Here is his idea of “Snack”:

Car “Snack”

A large pile of meat sandwiches, to be eaten… presently.  Brisket he smoked in our neighbor’s smoker the day before, to be exact.

I also brought a Fun Bag of small toys.  Naturally our children took turns alternately demanding and snubbing any and all of the above options.

Q:  What do you get when an entertainer and chef have a family?
A:  Children who expect and demand to be well fed and entertained all the time!

Such is the way with kids.  It’s their *job* to explore boundaries.  Explore/exploit; yada yada.  No matter how good you are at something they will find fault at some point and  keep you informed any and every time you get it WRONG, in their opinion anyway.

I guess the trick is to not return the favor, but instead to ever find *graceful* ways of compassionately redirecting them, right?  Even when your last nerve just flew the coop and you are left violently banging your mind against the walls of your sanity.  Sure.

Wait did I digress again?  Sorry.

Otherwise it was a lovely trip!

“If” Gavin Had 100 Books

If He Had 100 Books

If He Had 100 Books

At school assembly this morning, Gavin’s class sang an original rendition of “If I Had a Million Dollars,” while showcasing their own artwork about a favorite thing.

When it was Gavin’s turn he actually sang into the microphone as well:

Towards the end they also sang together about Montessori math materials of which I’m so fond; “If I had 100 Golden Beads, I’d trade them for a 100 square” and, “If I had a hundred ten bars, I’d trade them for a 1,000 cube.”  Adorable.

PS: He has HUNDREDS of books, and reads all the time. Like right now for example;

A Day in the Life – Apres Easter

Monday, April 6th 2015

Perhaps hungover from Easter, my son was too grumpy to sit with his sister for School Breakfast.  He is the little orange speck there in the background:

A Family that Dines Together…

His sister did not seem to mind her brother’s standoffishness:

Goofball Breakfast

She is not mocking him here, just goofing around apropos of nothing:

I don't know where this clown came from

I don’t know where this clown came from

Apparently refreshed from nourishment (about which he’d been pissed I insisted he have), he came over pleased with himself and a bag of chips on his head:

Chip Head Boy

Potato Chip Head

After school that day, we happened to drift into companionship with some wonderful school friends.   For reasons you and I would apparently understand if we were kids -or would not need to ask-  the kids arbitrarily piled themselves into a Car Party:

Car Party!

It’s a Car Party

If you need to ask what that is, you are obviously not a kid.  (Incidentally, the level of *blonde* in the school was way over-represented in the car this afternoon.  In fact might have been 100% of them right there.)   Then it wasn’t long before the oldest uttered the fateful words: “Jenny could you paint my face?”

To their delight I *happen* to keep all my work gear in the car (“just in case”); and to mine I *happened* to have the time.  To boot it was also a beautiful sunny day (of few so far this year), and they *happen* to have a yard where they live across the street from school.  Stars align!

Up first;

Dragon

Then ClaraJane:

Then:

Not a Butterfly (o:

Finally, Gavin’s “Barbarian” from “Clash of Clans:”

Raar!

Final Result?

Voila

Given that these parents and I are among those aiming to foster Mindfulness within our community, I thought it particularly fitting to find this *serene* tableau in their yard:

Anytime, Anywhere

Anytime, Anywhere

On the way home we stopped by Daddy’s work to show him our faces, and to see his:

Seefood Paul

Seefood Paul

Then my Mom who came over for rescue babysitting while Paul and I had work conflicts.  Here is her summary:

♥                                 ♥                                   ♥

ClaraJane put herself to bed immediately after two stories and was snoring by 7:15. Paul said she’s been napless for a couple of days.  Being tired, she pitched a fit a couple of times (“I want my mommy!” “Sorry, she’s working.  Just eat your dinner.”) but we just plowed through them and she recovered pretty much of her own volition.  Gavin from his second-story aerie claimed he didn’t want to listen to stories, but offered a from-memory running commentary on every page.*

ClaraJane’s toothbrush seems to be missing.  She used her finger.

I loved having the timed schedule to follow.  Very helpful.  Love the Easter photos!

*[“Spot Bakes a Gateau” in French (I could translate most of it), and “Stick” (love the ending of “Stick.” I’ve heard ClaraJane previously make reference to people who “glow.”)]

                                       ♥                                 ♥                                   ♥

*sigh*

These are the days.

Oh!  Easter photos!  Right-O.

Professor Quackenstein Duck Tour

April 1st 2015

The Professor and Crew

The Professor and Crew

As if the excitement of finally riding the Big Underwear Social Tour Bus this week wasn’t enough, I also got to ride the very Boston Duck Boat Tour driven by my BELOVED friend, Danny.

Duck Riders

Duck Riders

Actually that’s Professor Quackenstein to YOU.  You might also know him by some of his “experiments in alchemy, time travel, and discount brain surgery.”

Danny as Professor Quackenstein

Professor Quackenstein

I’ve been meaning to take this tour ever since Dan BECAME Quackenstein a couple years back.  This season, thanks to my niece Evvy needing to write a paper on an “interesting person,” I’ve been stalking the ice on the Charles River, waiting for the moment it melted so we could go asap.  It was a gorgeous day, and a glorious way to brush off the crusty winter and splash into Spring.

Happy Mamma

Our Duck this day was Beantown Betty, as perceived in this Selfie:

Beantown Betty

I want to delve into all things Danny here, but that is both a subject deserving its own post and the topic of my niece’s paper.  Let me suffice it to say that in addition to being an incredible juggler, performer, musician, rock band leader, stand-up comic, family man, FRIEND and -more recently- Duck Boat Tour driver (!), he and his juggling partner Joel perform the Amazing Nano Brothers Juggling Show at our own Boston Museum of Science.

"And in my spare time I perform tiny scientific juggling shows at this little science museum."

“And in my spare time I perform tiny juggling shows it this little science museum.”

Quackenstein himself even snapped this shot of my kids at the helm, during his compulsory “union break” out on the water.

Thrilling as the ride was, his voice was still soothing enough for my three year old daughter to eventually drop off into the Land of Nod.

Alas, here’s my video of our enchanting experience;  2015-04-01 Quackenstein Duck Tour [4mins, 5secs]:

Priceless!

Priceless Times

THANK YOU QUACKENSTEIN!  Your tour was the GREATEST, and our experience was -quite literally- priceless.

B.U.S.T. Bon Voyage Joy Ride

Sunday, March 29th 2015

One last time, before they head back home to Germany for six months, we visit the Big Underwear Bus.  This time… for my first time… for a RIDE.  As in, actually spark the thing up and DRIVE IT AROUND.  Obviously it’s a BUS, and it’s been from Oregon to PANAMA and back and forth across the U.S. several times.  But to me it’s more like a myth and a legend.  To me the bus is a spiritual home and magical bungle of the most singularly unique friends I have.  Here we go.
This time, within seconds, Gavin is behind the wheel:

Ready to Roll

Ready to Roll

Brady sparks up the Bus by poking it in the butt (that is where the ignition switch is; ain’t it true for us all):

What we all need

A Poke in the Butt to Get Going ; What We All Need

And we’re off!

Bonus Co-Pilot

Driver’s Helper

Gavin *helps* with driving;

Assistant Co-Captain

Assistant Co-Captain

While ClaraJane engages Irmi in staring contest.

Staring Contestant

(They both won!)

While in motion, the bus tends to sprinkle down items falling off shelves and stuff, such as this hat:

Uncle Sam's Nephew

Uncle Sam’s Nephew

Meanwhile, I drive like this every day:

I drive like that everyday!

(Well maybe not the stripper part)

Daddy & CJ get dreamy:

"I'm Floating" "I'm on a Boat"

ClaraJane:  “I’m Floating”   DLove:  “I’m on a Boat”

After a leisurely, picturesque jaunt from Warwick, R.I., we stop along the waterfront of historic Wickford:

Dock Clomping Girl

Where adventure awaits:

Follow the Leader (Mitläufer?)

Follow the Leader [aka: “Mitläufer”?]

Also because adventure awaits wherever you decide to make it (even if whilst holding Daddy’s Hand):

Explorers

Explorers

I say nothing and follow silently as Gavin clambers back and forth along the boulders, along the icy water precipice.  Before my eyes his confidence grows.  He asks me to time him.  1:31.  Again: 1:15.  Again:  0:52 seconds!  0:52 again.  Then 0:47!   Amazing.  Wonderful!  (HOORAY FOR THE UNBRIDLED CHILD)

Newfound Boulderer

Bouldering Boy

Then a stroll through town, with a stop to admire someone ELSE’s collection of antique MARBLES (Gavin’s most coveted possession of Brady’s):

Listen, Son...

It’s like this, Son…

Then into the “Grateful Heart” to visit our beloved MariBeth (even if the store owners weren’t so grateful we stopped by near closing time).

Grumpy Anyway

(even if Grumpy)

Then we followed Maribeth to her friend’s Blues performance at this place.

Who needs a Villa when you have a Bus?

Who needs a Villa when you have a Bus?

Brady & Irmi danced their last night in the U.S., before heading back to old Deutschland.

Not before Brady waxes sentimental for all he is leaving here… for now:

My Friend

My Friend (whom I treasure)

Back to Bus HQ for one last night.  With a little helper, Irmi whips us up a coffee for the road;

ClaraJane and Irmi in the Kitchen... with a pot on the hearth fire...

ClaraJane and Irmi in the Kitchen while the pot waits on the hearth fire...

And it’s Bon Voyage.

<3

“You don’t have to do anything to join.  You’re already a part of it.”

In review, here’s the movie version of our day; Big Underwear Bon Voyage Joy Ride [2min,15secs]:

Auf Wiedersehen

Und… DANKE SCHOEN!!!

Magic Beans

Thursday, March 26th 2015

Adorable Beans

Adorable Beans

Off to Magic Beans to spend the $10 ClaraJane earned with her Marble Jar!

Who loves her brother

Who loves her brother

Quelle Surprise, the kids are in especially copacetic moods.

And guesses he loves her back

And who guesses he loves her back

Who am I to resist photographing them:

This is forever, Guys

This is forever, Guys

Once inside, among the many wonders, ClaraJane presents me this and says: “Mom, you and me get to be neighbors.  And you live in the down floor and I live in the top floor.  It’s for you.”

It's for you

My Neighbor

At long last choices are made (and again she insists her brother gets the same reward as her), and serious transactions are conducted:

At the Cash Register

Getting Change from the Clerk

And treasures are gained.

Rejoice!

Rejoice!
