Hooray for the MacBook

With encouragement from my husband AND my mother, I bit the bullet this past weekend and MADE THE SWITCH.  After years of hobbling and cobbling together photo, video and sound editing with borrowed and downloaded software on my PC… it was a few weeks ago at my son’s school when the school “Technology Specialist” recorded my voice on a MacBook SO EASILY AND WELL using “Garage Band” (one of its many standard artistic tools) that I finally said, “WHAT AM I DOING!?  WHY AM I STILL A PC IN THIS MAC WORLD!?!?!”  It’s like, HULLO!  I’m an *ARTIST* yo!  “That’s IT,” I said, “I’m making THE Switch.”

If you know me or follow this blog, you know I’m always yearning for more time to actually DO the Blog (chiefly for the selfish purpose of documenting my kids etc.).  Do you suppose a new found ability to do it from, say, BED, or a COFFEE SHOP, will help?  Call me lazy but many nights (and days) -after GIGS and KIDS- it is apparently too much to ask of me to actually sit down at the DESK and deal with Ye Olde PC.

So here I go; wheee!!!

My first foray into iPhoto:

Yes, it’s my reality and I can enhance it if I want to.  And by the way, PhotoShop?  Thank you for all the great times PhotoShop.  I am sure you are worth every penny I never paid for you.  But, let’s see, how do I put this?  Um…  See ya!  (Get it? “See…”?   Never mind.  We were never meant to be.)

And STAY TUNED for the little nugget I just threw together in iMovie.  COMING SOON… to a BLOG POST NEAR YOU!

************************************************************************

Oh, and PS:  The other Great Hope-Promise is my finally getting caught up (and perhaps *staying* that way?  Or… getting ahead? ) on my admin WORK duties.  What do you think?

And also, PPS:  As I write here from the kitchen table still in my jammies with a *cat* on my lap… do you think I’ll ever shower again?  Tell me Mac; do you have an App for THAT?

PPPS:  As for the Nut$ & Bolt$:  “The $witch” *only* co$t me about $1,450, for the 256G model including 3 year warranty.  Coulda woulda shoulda financed it for 0% over 18 months… but my approval for the credit line came through AFTER I left the store.  By then I had taken A Gulp and The Plunge.  Now I steel my nerves as I undertake to pay this thing off in the face of the holiday$.   So, if you only get a card from me this year (or an email)… call me a selfish wench but now you know why!  At least I’m an honest, selfish wench.

PPPPS:  I have to add that the folks at the Apple store couldn’t have been greater by the way.  (That’s you, Caleb and Holger!)   They are inexhaustibly helpful, and make the loss of your dearly departed money as truly pleasant as possible.  Isn’t that nice of them?  Great job, guys!

PPPPPS:  (“Won’t she ever shut up?”  Nope!  Just ask my mom.)

PPPPPPS:  Hi Mom!  Look, no wires!  (Or hygiene…)

Tobin Pledge Song

So… last week I got embroiled in trying to present EVERYTHING there is to know about my son’s school at Back to School Night.  Of course it was a ridiculous idea, an impossible task and a floppy mess in the end (EXCEPT for the new comprehensive contact sheet that was created).  YET, as a first attempt at “Theatre of Place,” and in keeping with my training to “FAIL SPECTACULARLY,”  it was a great success.  Especially because many, many great things came out of it.  Nerve-wracking as the whole experience was, all was made worthwhile by getting to perform and debut our NEW SCHOOL SONG as a finale.   Here it is (and remember to click the title of this post in order to view the video online): Enjoy!

[53 seconds]

Thank you especially to Lou Pingitore & Judy Bright for performing it with me, and to Mary Frawley for videoing!

Firebomb Lovey Ninja Dance

Earlier this year my son designated a goal of “Firebomb Lovey” for himself. He made a chart and filled it up over time with stickers for good behavior and everything. Unfortunately I don’t even know where that chart is now. But happily, we finally made Firebomb Lovey yesterday! (Phew. It’s a relief to not fail delivering an earned promise to your child.) Here it is, Behold!

Apparently he is pleased with the outcome, judging by the song & dance it inspired:

Full Disclosure:  He just came in this morning, disappointed he “forgot” to show me his THIRD Version Ninja Dance.  He asked me to videotape it and performed it on the spot to add to this post.  (A rare treat, considering he usually rebels at being recorded, like any kid.)  Not to be missed, here it is:

Skip Hop RUN!

2013-08-23 On this day…

ClaraJane wanted nothing to do with her dress. I got the bloomers on over the diaper and then for the dress it was all, “OWEEEEEE!!!” Ri-i-ight.  I decided not to fight it. Yet before we left she was sure to put on her firetruck rain boots. OK, so with her Paci-Love combo -she doesn’t go *anywhere without one, the animal du jour being *chicken* today- the Baby Goddess’s was Ready to Go.

Meanwhile, she has cultivated this little Skip-Hop gait in place of regular ambulation. Here is the result, for your enjoyment:

Non Fiction

Being the morning after a late night gig, today my family charitably let me sleep in a little.  (Y’know, like ’til 8:06.  Not bad.)   As my bleary eyes opened, I was blinded by the most beautiful sight a mother could see; her two children hugging.  “[This is my] BRUHDER…” cooed my girl, as my son hugged her back, smiling.  I do not have a photo of this to show you, because (as I always say,) the best things happen off camera.  Next thing I know, my daughter is donning big brother’s coveted *Spiderman hat*, and he is letting her!   “Do my eyes deceive me?” I asked, “Is this really happening?”

Is this really happening?

Yup!” says my boy, “This is NON-Fiction!” he announces, climbing into bed with me, sporting a watermelon face (thank you Daddy).

This is NON fiction

When I stumbled out of the bedroom, I encountered this:

?

My not-yet-two-year-old girl vacuuming

And this:

There's breakfast and coffee, dear

There’s breakfast and coffee, Dear

And this:

Your dining companion awaits

Your dining companion awaits

As I hunch over my coffee, my son decides to assemble a puzzle Map of the World (shouldn’t a king should always remain acquainted with his territories)… singing aloud, with his usual perfect diction: “ANT-ARK-TICA!”

His reading comprehension dazzles us daily

And, when my daughter decides All Is Not Right In Her World, who comforts her? [17 seconds of shaky videography but priceless soundtrack]

“Bruhder,” of all people

Doesn’t her position remind you Homer Simpson?  In fact, this Bizzaro-World morning makes me *feel* like Homer Simpson, in the episode where he time travels with a toaster and lands in a parallel universe [51 seconds]:

Yet, as with all things, “This too shall pass.”  Which is precisely WHY we celebrate the fleeting moments, even as they flee.

Pay Day

So today is my son’s first day of summer vacation from school.  He has already bumped up against boredom several times so far.  Perfect!  “Why are you working?”  he asks.  “Hey buddy, just because you don’t have school doesn’t mean I don’t have work!  This is what summer is for; for you to get bored and figure out creative stuff to do!”   Amidst our dealings there have already been several low-level, kind of whiny demonstrations on the home office floor.  I even got a, “School plans are stupid, human plans are stupid and God’s plans are stupid!”  I’m like, “OK buddy.  Whatever you say.”  (Thank you “1-2-3 Magic!”)

Then I devised the great idea of giving him his FIRST JOB.  Household trash cans.  So we went through a training of going around the house and collecting the 5 small cans of refuse into a bag.  He even had the initiative to see this through all the way downstairs into our building’s trash room.  Excellent!  For this we are instituting his first PAY, AND his first ALLOWANCE. (Not to be conflated, right?).  After discussion with Daddy Love, here is what we came up with.

50 cents (in quarters), as a fee for his JOB, once a week.  And what you *earn* cannot be taken away.  Plus 50 cents (in dimes) for being a responsible member of the family.  And this *can* be docked (eg; ten cents at a time), as a consequence for undesired behaviors (or -as suggested in 1-2-3 Magic, the parenting book about which I hope to blog soon- for not performing duties… of which he really has none to speak of as of yet).

Lastly, for his allowance and fee, we have designated a specific piggy bank of his choice, this doggy one.  And he has 100% discretion over how this $ should be spent (unlike the contents of other piggy banks which contains random $$ streamed to him from the universe, which can now more or less go into a savings account or the like, to accumulate until he is old enough to assume discretion over that as well).  I am relieved because although I have fervently wanted to help lay the foundation for fiscal literacy in my kids, I didn’t really know where to begin with the piggy banks and the real bank, and what to designate he should save (and for *what* and how long exactly), and what to designate he can spend as recklessly as a five year old heart desires.

The one I picked up at a garage sale for him when he was still in my belly!

I picked this up at a yard sale when he was still in my belly

Meanwhile, I also impressed upon him that the responsibility for GETTING paid lies squarely with him.  That although I will do my best to remember, it is up to him really to remind me, to see that he gets paid.  We picked Monday as Pay Day (convenient, as today is Monday, right after I *I* do much of my own earning on weekends.)  He even suggested he write me a note on Mondays and leave it by my bedside.  I said, “Great!  You know what that’s called??  An INVOICE!   That’s how you remind people to pay you.  And sometimes without it you don’t even get paid!”  (Am I sickening you yet?  I can just hear my mom groaning.  Sorry folks; just doing what all parents do and compensating for what we wish *we* had growing up.)

To remind himself to *invoice* me so to speak, he wrote “Pay Day” on all the Mondays in his calendar through December.  In doing this he also discovered that, yes, he *will* be going back to school in September (“DARN IT!”), yet there are TWO whole months of summer between now and then  (“How long is two months?”), and that there are *28* of these magical Pay Days coming this year.  And how much $$ is THAT?  Wow, right?

28 Pay Days scheduled this year

OK so I’m a nerd.  Too bad.  I’m super psyched.  NOT ONLY THAT, but how do you think I’ve managed to eek out this blog post just now?  Well, my dear boy seems to have pushed through the boredom threshold by making THIS:

2013-06-24 Pay Day (1)

Duplo Farm! (shout out to my new fave blog: Pasyon Road Farm)

And now he is doing THIS:

Making playdough furniture for the cardboard house he just "built"

Making playdough furniture for the cardboard house he just “built”

One more shot, because he takes my breath away:

It's like looking at my son

It’s like looking at my son

OK, that’s a wrap on desk time for me today.  The kid DOES deserve to go outside, don’t you think?  Bien sur.  Moi aussi.  A bientot!
