Camping: This is All We Need

Friday,  October 9th 2015

After weeks of planning and days of organizing, literally EVERYTHING we need is all prepped and ready to go.

image

This is all we need

Actually there are already bikes,  scooters and skate boards in the car,  plus camp chairs, hammock,  fire torches and booze.  Paul steps up to survey:

The King of All He Surveys

The biggest question is whether it will all squeeze in:

It fits!

We are actually meeting up with three other families this time, which we orchestrated for many reasons,  not the least of which is Paul’s pleasure in bringing THIS, and putting it to the test:

To the test we go!

GROWTH MINDSET: “FINE!!!”

GROWTH MINDSET: “FINE!!!”

A little gem for my kids’ school paper:

Resilience!

Resilience!

Parents: Instead of asking, “How was your day?” Ask your child, “What is something challenging you worked on today?” Or just ask about one specific area, such as, “What did you work on in Math today?” As a follow up, ask, “Did you feel like it was challenging?”

DID YOU KNOW? Research shows that, over time, students who are encouraged to work through a challenge far outperform their peers who are praised for being “smart.” Think EFFORT, not OUTCOME. So remember, instead of “Good job!” you can always say, “NICE EFFORT!”

Breakfast in ClaraJane’s Classroom

Class Breakfast in Room 283

Before taking off for the weekend, Paul and I partake in one of the rare special times parents are invited into the Montessori Children’s House Classroom, replete with breakfast.  Here is ClaraJane giggling behind us:

Peek-a…tee hee hee

We are so lucky to be at this school, not to mention have Ms. Mayya as ClaraJane’s teacher (& Ms. KariAnne – not shown):

Here she shows me a work practicing with screws and a screwdriver with confident, deft little fingers (randomly in the “Language Area”):

And finally,  a shot from classmate Annika’s lovely dad,  Kyle:

Purity

Wednesday, October 7th 2015  – 7:03am

Mother holds the hand of her child

I’m holding my 4 y/o daughter’s hand as we walk to the bus stop.  Actually, she holds my three of my fingers, and there is no feeling like it in the world.  It’s early, the air is crisp and the sun is sparkling through the green leaves now tinged with fall flame colors.  I step back in my mind’s eye, incredulous that I even *have* a daughter, bemused that I am even a Mom.  And with that comes the sobering knowledge that today could be my turn to have my child gunned down at school, as is now customary in our country because you know; Guns. (!)

“…to forever have your heart go walking outside your body.”

Every moment is precious and my knees get weak with the recognition of how lucky we are to be alive and all the health and love and “security” and beauty we have.

My daughter posits some baloney that her legs are “tired of walking” and wants to be carried.  That’s fine because carrying a child means walking in a HUG.  Now I am carrying this most pricelessly prized possession down the street like a trophy, the curve of her perfectly smooth plump cheek next to my own cheek.  I get to turn and kiss it at will.  It is so juicy and delicious… it is the most juicy and delicious thing I have ever kissed.  How fleeting our lives.

Before I pick her up I pull fruit from my pocket and ask her to hold it because it’s a perfectly ripe pear and we wouldn’t want it to get squished.  She bites into its juiciness, slurping by my ear and I explain we will have to come up with SOMETHING to do with that pear.

“EAT IT!” She proclaims, obviously . Silly Mom!

“Oh!” I say, “Good idea.” She takes another bite, more slurping. “OK now that we have a plan,” I continue, “We’ll have to figure out WHEN we should eat that pear.”

“RIGHT NOW!!” She blurts out in a slightly cracked, crazed, totally hilarious voice.  It’s the kind of perfect moment with a child that cannot be measured or explained, makes everything worth it and is why we have children.

I’m still drinking in the moment when the bus pulls up.  “PURPLE DRAGON!” she exclaims.  We weren’t even at the bus stop yet -having dallied to smell both the red AND violet flowers on the way- but the bus driver saw us and stopped for us right there. She scurries down me and clambers up the stairs in the bus.  I did not remind her that food is not allowed on the bus, nor mention to the bus driver the very delectable, juicy, messy piece of contraband in her possession.

Pink AND Purple Flowers

Red AND Purple

“Her brother?” asks the bus driver.

“Beg your pardon?” I say, not hearing what he said.

“Her brother?” he repeated.

“Oh him,” I demurred, “He’s not on my radar right now.”

Just kidding. I told him the truth; that Gavin was biking to school with Daddy for National Bike-to-School day.  What a nice bus driver, right?  This was actually ClaraJane’s first day riding the bus without her brother, by her choice.  Smart girl, right?  What a treat it was to walk with just one child.

The fleeting pricelessness of it all makes me weak in the knees.  I wipe away tears of humility and beg God’s mercy.  I cannot ask to be spared tragedy, because we are not special. Everyone is special, and no one escapes loss.  Just not today please.  Not today or tomorrow or any foreseeable day.  Some OTHER day, ok?   Some time out of sight and mind and not of this world.  Pretty please with sugar on top and Grace all around, Amen.

I am neither Christian, religious nor atheist. I believe in the validity AND the folly of all religions, though I do live in a church.  For lack of a better word I say Amen. So may it be.

Bless us.  Thank you.  THANK YOU (Universe, Spirit, luck, chance, God).  Amen.

So May it Be

So Be It

Cousins Mary & Miles

Friday, October 2nd 2015

Just these two shots alone are so cute I can hardly stand it.

Mmm... Sharpie. What a coup!

Sharpie? Check. Now for the REST of my diabolical plan…

2015-10-02 21.22.54

Cousin Pile

After a visit to their house on Friday afternoon, lo & behold, Paul comes home with our kids PLUS one.  Just like that it’s sleepover time with Miles.  Yay!

By Saturday we waste no time pressing him into the service of Coffee Duty:

2015-10-03 08.42.00-1

Bedside Service (my favorite kind)

Onward to the Great Trio Castle of Bakugan:

Masters of this Domain

Masters of this Domain right here

Peas and Carrots:

2015-10-03 09.53.01-1

“Meatball & Carrot Stick”?

A few heartbeats later it’s time for the pickup side of the playdate, which means adding Aunt Amanda, Baby Mary and… bunnies!  Or as she likes to call them:  CAT!  CAT!  CAT!*

2015-10-03 09.58.18-1

Amanda, Mary and “Cat” and “Cat”

*(Mary’s irst, favorite AND only word so far.)

The visit also means hand-me-downs, such as:

2015-10-03 10.01.27-1

Tobin Tiger To-Be

Including the infamous BOOB HAT –lovingly made by the prolific Bubble Wow– crafted especially for nursing in PUBLIC:

2015-10-03 10.04.34

My head is not a boob!

Speaking of heads, a swooping visit to the top of Uncle Paul’s (rather uncharted territory, at his height):

2015-10-03 10.21.18-1

Does this stuff come off?  (Nope, tug away.)  Weeeee!

And before we part, just to make Aunt Jane Ann’s heart skip a couple beats with worry down in Dallas, some requisite naked roller skating:

2015-10-03 10.25.04-1

Is there any other kind?

(Sorry Jane Ann, I would photograph CJ in clothes more often if she would *wear* them!)

Finally, here is Mary practicing “gentle touches” with CAT CAT, because when you love something THAT MUCH:

Fenway Fabulous

Sunday, September 27th 2015

Big Leaguers

Big Leaguers

After working Red Sox games for the past couple years, but never making it to a game, my worlds collided yesterday at Fenway Park.  Although I’d thought to organize my family into the countryside somewhere to view the SuperMoon Eclipse, what materialized instead was the offering of work at Fenway before Sunday’s game (as juggler) and after (as face painter). When my agent/boss pointed out I would need to find “something to do” during the game, it became a no brainer.

2015-09-27 14.43.29-1

Grand Stand Grandness

Here I am amid the throngs streaming down Yawkey Way beforehand:

2015-09-27 12.50.20

When along comes my personal peanut gallery:

2015-09-27 13.18.50-2

Fist Pump

2015-09-27 13.18.55-1

Thumbs Up

Turns out this is the LAST home game of the season, so Magic Mat and Big League Brian are quite sincere in their exuberance here after making it through the season:

2015-09-27 13.34.05-1

Where’s Gavin?

2015-09-27 13.34.12-1

Ta da!

First, “one more” trick:

2015-09-27 13.35.35-1

Is that your card?

Somehow we missed a photo with our favorite Russian Juggler, Benjamin the Clown! He made ClaraJane her pink flower balloon.  He’s not only our favorite, he’s my (pretend Russian) FATHER.  We love you Benjamin!! ♥ ♥ ♥

ClaraJane also got her face painted by the great Patty Sorell:

2015-09-27 13.39.18-1

Wally the Green Monster Cheek

It is a (shocking) paradox to me that of the thousands of faces I paint,  it is almost never my own daughter or son (I know… “cobbler’s kids”).   I soak this one up vicariously:

How Much is that Monster in the Mirror?

How Much is that (cute) Monster in the Mirror?

Speaking of work, here is the “Family Bathroom” where I once nursed ClaraJane intermittently throughout my EIGHT hour shift juggling when she was NINE DAYS old!

2015-09-27 15.30.14-1

No baby anymore (except she will always be my baby)

(That fateful day August 20th, 2011:  I’d actually had to wait in line with minor league players performing in that day’s exhibition.  I’m happy to say Fenway now has a wonderful privacy pod-thingy for moms who are nursing or pumping; and I hope a better potty provision for minor league players too.)

After some lovely time in the stands, the kids are ready to visit Wally’s Clubhouse, where we are greeted by the 9-foot Wally Balloon constructed for each each home game by my boss/agent/friend/engineering genius guy, Royal Sorell:

2015-09-27 15.42.00-1

Even taller than Paul

Gavin gets right to work at the virtual baseball game:

2015-09-27 15.33.07-1

While Daddy looks on in envy

And ClaraJane wastes no time raiding Wally’s Toys:

2015-09-27 15.34.48-1

Green Monster Toy Box

There is no rest for the weary,  and so Magic Mat is preparing for his next show.  Gavin takes this opportunity to give me a hard time for not having a nice sign for my gigs like this guy does:

Only $20 bucks at Vista Print? What the heck Mom!

Only $20 bucks at Vista Print? What the heck Mom!

It’s ironic to have my very excuse for not being on top of things, giving me sh*t for not being on top of things.  To that end I also need one of these:

Fenway Face Painting; $1 Million Dollars

Fenway Face Painting;            $1 Million Dollars

On with the show though (albeit not mine this time):

2015-09-27 15.36.04-1

You can also see Magic Mat RandomEffects.com

After the game, fans were invited to RUN THE BASES!  First the boys root root root for the home team dugout:

2015-09-27 16.25.26

Digging the Dugout

Then Paul chases the kids around the diamond:

2015 Base Running @Fenway [36 seconds]:

I hang back because #work:

In my customary crown of sunbeams

In my customary crown of sunbeams

Which I enjoy “working” out in the field (face painting for Red Sox employee event) until the sun goes down.

And the SuperMoon Comes UP.

SuperMoon over Fenway

Fenway SuperMoon

In conclusion, what we already know;  Fenway is Magic.

Ta da!

Missed the Bus

Monday, September 21st 2015

How to awake this piece of confection from her angelic slumber in my bed?  I mean seriously:

Naught to do but snuggle it.

Naught to do but snuggle it

Then while dressing, we hit a fashion snafu:

2015-09-21 06.58.45-1

A One-Footed Cute Monster

Somehow we all spill out to the bus stop, where Gavin attempts to extract some basketball skills from his Daddy:

Basketball Bus Stop

Basketball Bus Stop

After some time it dons on us the bus isn’t coming –because we missed it– so Daddy gets the car:

ClaraJane signs "I Love You"

ClaraJane signs “I Love You”

They’re off, and I go back to my pre-caffeinated, post-apocalyptic stupor, and perhaps  start finally taking off the makeup from my “weekend” of work.

Sacred in the Mundane, y’all!

Tunbridge Fair 2015

Friday-Sunday, September 18th-20st 2015

In honor of Miles’ & Bubble Wow’s birthdays, the family trekked up to one of our old favorite haunts in Vermont: The Tunbridge WORLD’S Fair.  I stayed back to grind away at work but came along in spirit.

First up, loading up the cars.  Mary’s prepared to drive:

2015-09-19 08.51.53-1

Speed Racer Game Face

Baba/Bubble Wow is all too happy to ride shotgun on this one:

2015-09-19 08.52.00-1

“Buckle Up Grandma!”

Then, stopping for snacks:

Sugar Babes

Sugar Babes

At last, Tunbridge Fair!  *Just* in time for… the CALVALCADE OF ANIMALS!!!

Whoo-wee!

What we call, “Exiting”

(Note: Nothing like this.)

That endless moment where you wait to cross the track while they pridefully display every last cow, sheep, goat, dog, horse, chicken and rooster at a slow clop… when all your kids really want to do is GET TO THE RIDES AND GAMES!    Here is Gavin pressed up against the fence so close to the Midway he can taste it:

2015-09-19 19.36.59

SO close, but SO far… wait!  Is that a HEREFORD?!

Paul reported that the last 4-H troop to plod by did generously cap the whole shebang with a delightful flourish of walking their animals in a little circle at the end.  Nothing like the pirouette of a cow to slake you with a deep, deep feeling of satisfaction.   Or as the child would say, “Phew it’s finally over can we GO NOW?”

And the answer is… not YET.  Because of course, having paraded all the animals from the barns out onto the grounds… they now have to go BACK.  Bonus:  You get to see them all go by TWICE.

Once they opened those gates the boys disappeared in a  blur.  First up, GAMES.  Paul described a protracted interchange between Miles –meticulously doling out $1 bills for a game– and the running commentary of the comical game operator lady sporting pronounced carney bosoms.  (Note: Nothing like these.)

Next; RIDES.  Here are Amanda, Gavin & Miles barreling down a big slide while apparently riding a burlap sac.

2015-09-19 14.41.51

YEE-HAW

Followed in hot pursuit by ClaraJane faithfully holding her Daddy’s hand:

2015-09-19 14.46.08

Don’t let go Daddy

Later Aunt Amanda captured some Cute Fuzzy Baby Animal Time:

2015-09-21 19.40.05

Baby Girl Chick with Actual Baby Chicks

2015-09-21 19.40.47

“Feed Corn” Sand Box; seriously how awesome is that

2015-09-21 19.43.08

Baby Mary & Baby Bunny

Q:  What’s cuter than a baby lop?

2015-09-21 19.45.08

A: A pile of baby lops.  (Duh!)

2015-09-21 19.45.56

James, Mary & Tiny Horse

After such an “exiting” time, it’s literally exiting time.  Nothing like grilled corn and a portion of Bacon-on-a-Stick to get you back to the car.  This weekend’s adventure also promised a hotel with HEATED POOL, much anticipated by Boys and evidently enjoyed by:

Girls

Bathing Beauty Girls

After a rough night’s sleep and refreshing morning swim, it’s off to the much anticipated MONTSHIRE MUSEUM of Vermont.  My Mom has always raved about it, and Hubby reports that it rivals my beloved Providence Children’s Museum of Rhode Island.  PLUS it sports an expansive outdoor play area (reminiscent of DeCordova sculpture park in MA).

Wanna go play, Honey?

Wanna go play, Honey?

There ya go:

There ya go, Kids

Montshire’s Garden

Gavin and Miles drop gravel into the Musical Rock Boxes:

Musical Rock Boxes

Rock Box Rockers

While Orla and ClaraJane whoop it up on the Musical Fence:

Hit it, Ladies

Hit it, Ladies

It’s a serious rule that before we do anything in this family, we do PICNIC; this one made possible by King Arthur’s Flour near Montshire in Norwich VT.

Pic-a-nic

Paul, James’ Mom Dell, Bubble Wow, Baby Mary & Dell’s Sister CKathy

Meanwhile, that ubiquitous moment Gavin is takin’ it easy while Miles waits and wonders, “When will you get up and PLAY!?”

Um...

Um…

Finally, a successful ride home to tell Mommy all about it, and Voila.  There you have my Vicarious Weekend adventure in Vermont (as conveyed from right here in my bed a couple days later in Massachusetts).

Or as my mom put it in her text:

Everything Devine. Wish u were here. Much love

In summary:  HAPPY BIRTHDAY MILES AND BABA!

Love you each so mush.

*      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *      *

PS:  For even more gripping anecdotes, see Bubble Wow’s retelling in the comments below!

The Purple Dragon Strikes Again

Thursday, September 17th 2015

After a year of taking the car to & from school (on account of ClaraJane being too young for the bus), now that she is FOUR the kids are stoked for the SCHOOL BUS.  At least this morning they were.  Gavin was dressed before I even woke up, and they both got ready in a fraction of the usual time, with none of the usual fuss.

A lovely walk instead of a drive, we wait on these beautiful steps and I find about 100lbs. of children in my lap:

Bus Stop Face

Bus Stop Face

The “Purple Dragon” Bus SWOOPS in, they SPRINT off, I *maybe* catch one of them for a kiss, and boom.  That’s it, they’re gone.

See ya!

SEE YA

It’s 7:05am and it’s SO WEIRD.  Granted I’ve been through this before, but not with my latest baby.  Sheesh.

Meanwhile I’d coached Gavin repeatedly on the need to be kind and decent to his sister.  You know, instead of the default mixture of disdain, disgust, disenchantment.  I suspect he will manage -if barely- even though from this photo I can see “chivalrous” is not exactly on the list.

Q:  At what age can a Boy start comprehending the concept of being a Gentleman?  And could this –would this– practice EVER apply to his SISTER?  Hopelessly hopeful moms want to know!
