DLove

For Father’s Day, Paul gifted us with a day full gloriously unstructured possibility.

First Up:  Hanging About

2016-06-19 09.43.43

Dad & Kids pause during morning art to gaze and gnaw olive & bacon Bloody Mary garnishes.

After the best darn Breakfast-He-Didn’t-Cook-Himself-Today, mom & kids swirling around the home and a lot of bicycle wrangling, we’re OFF.

First Stop; NERD UNDERGROUND

“FLEA Market?” say the kids, “Why would anyone want to buy FLEAS!?”

Turns out it was just what I was hoping for; Nerd Central.  In fact we only hit a tiny portion of it; literally a couple of guys hanging out in a garage selling stuff next to their cars.  BUT they can answer any question I need about computers, which is just what I need as we undertake to outfit our 8 year-old with something to suit his upcoming coding needs etc. (Whatever THAT is.  I dunno… it’s the future, man.)  Amidst my research Daddy Love gently reminds me that HE needs a computer.   Being that it is Father’s Day, there is a perfectly good one in front of us for a deep underground price and I *happen* to have that much cash on me… good thing Daddy has been such a good boy, like always.

Next Stop:  BIKE STORE

This day is ClaraJane’s maiden voyage on the “Come-Along,” attachment where she pedals while being towed behind mommy’s bike.  But due to a missing piece, her end would erratically TILT one way or another with a wild JERK that would stop my heart each time as I lose control of steering and fishtail in and out of traffic.  AWESOME!

The bike store couldn’t help us, but finally Daddy was able to coach ClaraJane to just “choose a side” and lean one way only.  WHEW we don’t die today!  (See also:  Ready to Roll from 8/10/12).

DESTINATION STOP: COOL OFF PARK

Between the Hatch Shell and Museum of Science is a water park, playground and picnic area right next to the Charles River.   We also brought our “Lay Bag,” whose wonders we are still discovering:

The first phenomena is automatically invoking the ubiquitous perils of looking comfortable:  look comfortable

It’s also a great place to reverse the paradigm on the latest Dad craze of stacking cheerios on their babies’ heads:

2016-06-19 15.36.46

Woulda stacked more crackers on the cracker but we already ate the rest.

FOR DINNER: Atwood’s Tavern

A Flamly Favorite!  In fact, the kids started fighting about who gets to sit closest to the barrel of fishies on the patio before we were even seated.  40 times we asked them to sit down and stop bothering the fish.  And here comes our profound parenting fail; not only did they NOT STOP WTIH THE FISH ALREADY, but suddenly the fish barrel started getting suspiciously… BUBBLY.  Like frothing with bubbles all of a sudden.  Daddy notices ClaraJane has in her possession a teeny-tiny, itty-bitty little bottle of… BUBBLES.  I didn’t even know we owned it.  It apparently came into possession by way of outing with *Grandpa* the other night.  In his generosity he probably didn’t even know he bought it for her, amongst the things he bestowed upon the kids at the mecca that is Targhay (“Target”) Boutique, but I digress.

As I’m deciding between crawling under the table or leaving, Paul points out the staff has already noticed.  He tells them there might have been some bubble soap added to the tank.  A waitress runs over and abruptly unplugs the little fountain mechanism to prevent further frothing.

THEN…

We notice a sudden steady stream of water gushing its way across the restaurant patio underneath the feet of patrons as the fish barrel rapidly voids itself of water, sinking down to half it’s previous capacity in what seemed less than a minute.

atwood's fish

Here is the actual banner from their website homepage, featuring said barrel of fish direct center.  This heavenly place is exactly where we sat, and are apparently no longer worthy.

Out of nowhere appears Patrick the Proprietor, of whom we happens to be huge fans, hands plunged in the tank, vigorously jerking stuff around connecting tubes and trying to save the fish from imminent peril.  Which he did.  (For now.)

Then the food comes, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!  I look at my delicious fish tacos and wonder how one can eat with the overpowering taste of shame in one’s mouth?  We opt to drink about it.  And assist ClaraJane in her note of contrition:

DEAR PAtRiCK.  Im SorrY For hUrting your fish.                                                          I didn’t mean to and I hope they Are ok.  ❤ ClARAJANE

#MORTIFIED

Another round and we somehow make it through.

FINAL DESTINATION:  HOME SWEET HOME…

A brief rest for Daddy:

2016-06-19 19.37.16

The cat is showing the way we feel.

IT’S NOT OVER:  We still have to honor a long promised round of CRANIUM CADOO, which is great for kids partly because parents can barely see the writing.

2016-06-19 20.18.39

Here is Daddy…

2016-06-19 20.18.46

Trying to read the writing.

The Flamly that games together stays together…

Flamly that games together stays together, hopefully

Hopefully

I think it was a good day for Daddy.

Night Night Sweet Daddy Love

Night Night Daddy Love

A final note from his mom, Grandma Z:

Political Revolution – Fair Elections

Friday, June 17th 2016

To Bernie Sanders’ lawyer, Brad Deutsch (bdeutsch@gsblaw.com), FWIW:

Dear Mr. Deutsch:
At the behest of a MoveOn.org petitioner Stephen Fox, I am writing you to urge support in your work responding to the election fraud that took place in so many states this year.  Thanks for your time in reading the five short paragraphs below:
I for one am SO THANKFUL to the Bernie campaign for showing what it’s like to act from the courage of one’s convictions, speak the truth, and operate a campaign WITHOUT the corrupting influence of lobbyists and special interests, ESPECIALLY in this post-apocalyptic, “Citizen United” Democracy-annihilating era.  Although I am 45 I feel like a millennial because I have never before been informed, much less ENGAGED and enthused in presidential elections or the democratic process in general.
In addition to educating us all about the state of our country and it’s corrupt campaign finance system, through his TRUTHFULNESS and heretofore unseen exemplar INTEGRITY he has empowered the citizenry to peel the wool off our eyes and see the corrupt, flawed, rigged system for what it is; corrupt, flawed and rigged.
Senator Sanders has PROVEN it is possible to mount a viable campaign for the presidency WITHOUT the influence of corporate money.  He has underscored the vital importance of campaign finance reform.  The very slim chance in the fight to reverse this oligarchy and restore democracy DEPENDS upon it.
Moreover, thanks to his honesty and the technology available to us through social media, we have been able to bifurcate our news sources; that of the Corporate MSM narrative, and what is ACTUALLY going on.  You may have a mass majority of American Sheeple still under MSM sway  voting for choice A) Warmongering Oligarch or choice B) Psychotic Demagogue, but the rest of us ARE NO LONGER FOOLED.  We SEE the disgraceful sham operating under the guise of fair democratic elections.  In our “first world” nation that is a global leader in technology and communication, it is deplorable that many of our state primaries look like sham exhibits of third world futility.
We cannot afford to wait for another election cycle.  The time to do everything we can to fix the flawed system is NOW, BEFORE the DNC.  The eleven states whose primaries were so obviously and blatantly corrupted must be brought to court IMMEDIATELY.  THANK YOU for this invaluable work.  And thank you for soliciting input of regular citizens like me.  I hope this has been of some encouragement.
Sincerely Yours,
~Jennifer O.

Drumlin Farm Field Trip with ClaraJane

Thursday,  June 16th 2016

2016-06-16 10.08.52-1

With Victor & CJ @ Drumlin Farm

As we careen wildly toward the  looming End-of-School-Year, today I got to chaperone with a shit ton of these little Children’s House Montessori students.  Happily, my charges were primarily ClaraJane and Victor who together are “like cousins.”

2016-06-16 09.07.21-1

After chickens,  eggs,  chick’s,  cows, pony, wild chipmunks and a barnyard cat comes the HAY RIDE (although vine to find out it’s actually *straw*).

2016-06-16 10.50.24-1

The inestimable Ms. Mayya + Co.

Then after a tour of the potable  (“kitchen”) garden, we make BUTTER!

2016-06-16 10.33.12-1

hand made butter

Who knew it was so easy.
1) heavy cream in a closed jar
2) shake until it’s whipped cream
3) *keep* shaking until it suddenly separates into skim milk and butter!
4) spread butter on cracker
5) enjoy!

2016-06-16 10.35.54-1

CJ the butter enthusiast, enjoying her butter.

Then inside to brush and twirl real wool into yarn, and visit the sheep from whom it came, before bus ride home.

2016-06-16 10.50.26-1

(this is not the bus ride home)

Thank you Friends of Tobin!

Thank you Children’s House!

Great trip!

ClaraJane’s (Almost 5th) Birthday Walk

Monday, June 13th 2016

2016-06-13 08.21.17

(Homemade shirt and necklace)

School will be out when she turns five so we celebrated a month early in class today.

Paul and I are invited into the Montessori classroom to participate in morning announcements, followed by some mindfulness breathing practices.  (“Ocean Breath” today… lucky kids; lucky society!)  Then ClaraJane introduces her special guests; “This is my mom.  And this is my dad.”

A symbolic Sun is placed in the middle of the circle and ClaraJane carries an Earth globe around the perimeter as we sing her a little song.

2016-06-13 08.11.26-1

ClaraJane carries Earth around the Sun

After each revolution we stop and reflect at what she was like at each year, starting at zero:

2011-07-11 Bringing CJ Home (25)

The Original CJ on her actual day of birth

The Peace Rose is then passed around the circle as each student shares birthday wishes to ClaraJane and says something kind.  There was much adieu about her “headband,” which I picked up at the dollar store last night ‘specially:

2016-06-13 08.15.44-1

Oliver can’t seem to take his eyes off it

Mommy and Daddy also share our birthday thoughts.  Here is Daddy -in his Chef whites from the kitchen downstairs- telling ClaraJane how much he loves seeing her every day at Breakfast and at Lunch:

Yes yes, my kids have the BEST DAD IN THE WORLD; he COOKS (and cleans and does laundry and loves us all so very well thank you), BUT what about SNACK!??

THAT my dears, is under MY purview:

2016-06-13 08.24.17-1

Dolphin banana grapes

As you plainly see, the greatest virtue of this snack for school is that it is… GLUTEN FREE.  (No I don’t know what “gluten” is so don’t ask.  But I’m certain I didn’t add any to the grapes or bananas.)

Ms. KariAnne did not hesitate to list them sur le Menu du Jour:

2016-06-13 08.24.48-1

Written in English and Art

She even posted it on Facebook:

2016-06-13 09.20.16

To be clear, today is NOT about the snack, it’s not.  It was just so fun to make, and because of team work with Daddy on shopping and his incomparable Sous-Chef ClaraJane on plucking and washing the grapes, it was *EASY.*   Still not practical for every day purposes so all the more special.

Special like our spectacular big little girl, the one like no other, “La Plus Grande Petite Fille du Monde.”

2016-06-07 07.07.15-1

Love you to pieces ClaraJane!

A Future to Believe In Song

June 7th 2016

While they’re duking it out in polls in CALIFORNIA, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and North Dakota… some of us are duking it out on social media and let me tell you it is NOT pretty.  Let me spare you the gory details and cut right to this beautiful incisive gem right here.

A Future to Believe In – Original Bernie Rap by Katie Hazdovac [2:58]:

#lyrics!

As I’ve stated and continue to state;  I’m fighting to raise my children in a world where we choose our leaders on the contents of their character, not their underpants.

Sanders for the win!  POTUS or no POTUS.   But definitely preferably POTUS!!

If 70’s Moms Had Blogs

June 2016

Ran across this spoof blog post set in the 70’s , which opens like this:

“This morning I got up and Jennifer and Kimberly were eating Pop Rocks in front of the TV set watching Captain Kangaroo while Matt was already out in the back yard with a glass of Tang. I sat down and had a cigarette.”

[See Victoria Fedden, author and award winning blogger.]

BIG_Wheel_(3327257572).jpg

No helmet required.

When I shared this with my mom (who likewise dabbled in parenting occasionally during the 70’s), she offered this more customized take:

“Jennifer and Robert went out to scream down the curving hillside of Fairview Avenue on their Big Wheels. When they got tired they came inside and finished the bags of Halloween candy they’d gone out alone and collected the night before. When they got cranky I fed them lunch, Campbell’s chicken noodle soup with Twinkies for dessert. Jennifer’s bottom was still red where her dad had whooped up on her for approaching the unfenced swimming pool. The scar on the bridge of Robert’s nose has healed pretty well from the plastic that sliced him when I put him in his toddler baby seat, which was *supposed* to be an improvement on the “baby pan” that used to crash into the floor at stop signs despite my automatic “safety arm slam”. Fortunately he hadn’t been hurt much when the baby bicycle seat that hooked over the handlebars of my junk-shop bike fell off while riding around Homestead. Also fortunately, he never opened the unlockable back doors of the ancient Mercedes we drove from Florida to California. He was always an angel at Fairyland Nursery School six days a week but was sometimes irritable at home on Sundays, even though he could go to the fridge any time to pop a Little Oly.”

When I asked her what “pop a Little Oly” meant, she simply explained that “Olympia beer used to produce small-size portions in pop-off cans.

I’ll just let that sink in:

s-l225 pop a little oly

Little Olys

AND SHE NEVER TOLD ME THIS GENIUS PARENTING TIP TIL NOW!?  Next time my kids are cranky…  Oh man apparently I need to go out and find us some tiny beers STAT.  Not to mention Twinkies.

Omg the 70’s, man.

twinkies

Mmm… the 70’s.

One thing I can say in defense of my mom’s choices though, when she named me “Jennifer” in 1970… there was NO WAY she could have known that EVERY other mother for the next decade would ALSO name their daughter Jennifer.

It’s not a bad name anyway.  Let’s just say “Jennifer” is one of the more palatable things to have come out of the 70’s.

All 50 million of us.

Kitten Becomes a Cat

June 2nd 2016

image

“Good morning children. Time to wake up. We get to take Kitten to school today!” I say.

“Oh yeah,” goes ClaraJane from a dead sleep to a stretch, “Cuz he’s getting his balls neutered.”

Something like that.

I mean to create a blog post dedicated to this cat on account of how infectious he is and how much we love having him in our family.

For now, here he is in the waiting area on the inevitable day,  having perched himself in the perfect hideout from which to survey his now unfamiliar and suspicious surroundings.

image

DARTH SNOWFLAKE is a sweet cat and was an excellent patient,” it says on his discharge papers.  “Please prevent DARTH SNOWFLAKE from licking or chewing at his incision by keeping an ‘Elizabethan Collar around his neck for the next seven days.

Sir_Walter_Raleigh_OBNP2009-Y04298

Like Sir Walter Raleigh here

Or:

image

The *Indigity*

Poor Darth Snowflake.  Truth be told he slipped himself out of the “E.C.” (that’s what they actually call it) right away,  showed no interest in messing with his incision and no signs of pain.  So the $35 extra I spent on pain meds and plastic cone on top of the $260 5-minute procedure in a world class (yet locally most affordable) institution feels like kinda a sham,  but I guess it beats the insecurity that would have come with our other option in getting him neutered… something my Iowa-born Hubsand purports to have something to do with a rubber band.

(Letting that sink in here.)

Anyhoo, now our sweet precious little irresistible innocent darling should be less inclined to spray our personal belongings and snug living quarters with his own special brew of oily testicular juices and pee.  (Hooray!)

Leaving more time for this type of priceless wonderful nonsense during our ONE whirl inside this meaningless,  immeasurable treasure of a lifetime tour on this planet:

image

Yup. More of that.

Aw, DARTH SNOWFLAKE. We love you!
