Parenting: Video Game Rant

Sunday, February 11th 2018

fuckity Curse-Word-Coffee-Mugs.jpg

Somehow my son’s extensive and impressive foray into Minecraft has morphed into a “Roblox” habit.  Keep in mind yes we regulate the amount of time he gets on the computer, say nothing for the unmitigated access he probably gets from his friends (close by condo neighbors).   And no I don’t know WTF “Roblox” is, except for this article I just read, ugh.

roblox.jpg

Today I heard an alarm going off and went to look out the window to see what neighbor’s house was sounding.  Come to find out the alarm was in the GAME he was playing, because his character had just robbed a jewelry store!

WHY? I ask him, more existentially than literally.  “WHAT ARE YOU PREPARING FOR?” I ask him.  “NOTHING!” he says.  “EXACTLY” I say.

With no research on the topic yet –I happen to loathe the topic because in my world there are nowhere near enough hours in any day for all the myriad incredible things there are to do I.R.L.—  I insist that there are video games that help cultivate all kinds of positive skills and behaviors.  This claim is met by blank stares and skepticism in my household.  But there is even a game where the object is to help find WATER in areas of the planet where water is scarce.

And guess what; in the future that is going to be EVERYWHERE.  So I told my son that locating and producing potable water is going to be a necessary skill in his future, as cities run out of water.  First up; Cape Town Day Zero in two months.

cape town water queue

Queuing for water in Cape Town, thankfully without violence yet.

I told him I saw FIRST HAND a game my friends played in England -15 years ago!- where the object was to run around town trying to find an old wise person who could translate some sacred ancient text.  Granted not the most exciting video game, but no killing or stealing.

I told Gavin it’s not his fault most games are made of killing and stealing because that is what MEN have been doing since MEN have existed.  I pointed out as he knows that’s not going to change anytime soon since we have political leaders hellbent on continuing the same (take Bears Ears, for ONE example).  I also told him he comes by his penchant honestly considering he is probably related to people who are addicted to video games centered around killing and stealing.

I told him that no problem was ever solved by the same thinking that created it.  And that I don’t care if  99.99% of video games are made of stealing and killing.  That I, his mother, insist that he find a game that simulates creating something positive for a virtual world.  I told him if he does this I will consider allowing him to continue also playing whateverthefuck “Roblox.”

He said okay.

In any case, that is my rant for now.  Obviously more research and time into something I don’t like or want is called for.  All the video game addiction I see all around me is such utter and complete f*ing bullsh*t in my view it is a nonstarter for me.

I think I want to make a sign for the desk in front of the computer that says:

FOR WHAT ARE WE PRACTICING??

God forbid we cultivate a mindset and awareness for helping to SOLVE the world’s problems rather than to perpetuate them.

Flippin’ frickin’ fracking fudge.

Parenting: Boost Executive Function with Hand Clapping Games

February 7th 2018

hand clapping imageexecutive-function image

OK so I’m taking a parenting class called Mind Matters, compliments of Harvard University and the Cambridge Public School District.  (#Blessings.)

Thanks to workshops and novice research in the past, I have come to understand Executive Functioning to be defined like:

ExecutiveFunction defined

When my six year old daughter gets herself dressed to shoes, jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, backpack, homework and a snack all ready to go… I swoon at what I consider to be her marvelous Executive Functioning.

ExecutiveFunctionBrain

⇒  On a personal note, the extent to which I see (always at my restaurant Kids Night jobs) parents allowing their kids to melt their brains with nonstop video devices (aka: reinforcing the amygdala, or “Reptile Brain” and undermining the growth of the prefrontal cortex, or “ABILITY TO FUNCTION”) drives me  a b s o l u t e l y  nuts… but that is a post for another day.   Or not.

Prefrontal Cortex

Anyhoo…

The researchers at Harvard define Executive Functioning as:

  • working memory
  • inhibitory control
  • flexible mindset

And there just happens to be a FUN ACTIVITY kids can do that help cultivate all three of these qualities.  And GUESS WHAT; it’s Patty Cake!  Or “Hand Clapping Games.”

Here are some rhymes for future reference:

Make New Friends

Children’s Song

Make new friends,
But keep the old.
One is silver,
The other is gold.

A circle is round,
It has no end.
That’s how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
It warms the heart.
We’ve been friends,
From the very start.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
And so are you.

You help me,
And I’ll help you
And together
We will see it through.

The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
To keep it clean.

Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be.

And for the risque…

Miss Lucy Had a Steam Boat

Hand Clapping Song

Miss Lucy had a steam boat,
The steam boat had a bell, (Toot! Toot!)
Miss Lucy went to heaven,
And the steam boat went to
Hello operator, give me # 9 and,
If you disconnect me, I will chop off your
Behind the refrigerator, there was a piece of glass,
Miss Lucy sat upon it, and broke her big fat
Ask me no more questions, tell me no more lies
The boys are in the bathroom, pulling down their
Flies are in the country, bees are in their hives
Miss Lucy and her boy friend
Are kissing in the D-A-R-K (spell out)
D-A-R-K
D-A-R-K
Dark! Dark! Dark!

Performing Life: Kids Night Balloon Jam

Monday, February 5th 2018

2018-02-05 BALLOON JAM VIDEO [29 seconds]:

Mamma mia.  Every Monday night I provide face painting and balloon animals for Kids Night at a Pizzeria near Boston.  This night was off the hook because the local balloon twisting community collaborated with me to host a workshop “jam” there.  The turnout far exceeded anyone’s expectations so it was crowded and crazy for a while, but great.  I also conscripted Dear Hubsand to bring the children, for added measure.

They kindly took turns painting each other while I was busy with the balloon artists.

Gavin jumps into the action.

The balloon jam culminates in a contest; tonight’s theme being All Things Italian.

Johnny, Adrian & other staff members judge the entries.

First Place:

Wine bottle candlestick in a bed of fruit by Robbie Furman, renowned “Twistocologist.

Second Place:

Nintendo Mario by Steven

Third Place:

Balloon Pope, lol!

By Sara Krakauer

Fun Fact:  Jonah doesn’t usually smile like this and normally looks more exactly like that balloon, lol.

Honorable Mention:

Look-a-like Jonah,

by Jonah with an assist from Patty Sorrell.

Gavin even gave it a go and entered his own slice of pizza pie!*

img_2265-1

Proud of himself and rightfully so.

Mom’s #1 Pick

*Which is both better and more than I have done;  I wouldn’t know how to make a pizza slice and have never entered a balloon contest!

Time to go home.

Goodnight ClaraJane Unicorn Balloon Princess Fairy Girl

I clean up and the staff enjoys the spoils:

Adrian models googly glasses

Hilarious cook dude sports a latex fedora

Rob (and sometimes Santa) making pizza in style, cook dude mocking him down the line

And that’s how you host balloon jam at your restaurant Kids Night gig.

PS:  Gavin insists I include this story about the balloon jam evening:  leaning pisa

When I was about to leave a young man from the bar came up to me and said, “You do a great job.  I see you every week and sometimes I want a balloon.”

I thanked him and said, “Well can I interest you in this Leaning Tower of Pisa?”

He said, ‘No way, really?!”  And tipped me five bucks.  I didn’t even make the thing, my friend Bruce did.  So Bruce if you’re reading this, I guess I owe you five bucks.

Also of note:

Before leaving, our host Bruce told me how Gavin had come up to him with a very nice bum rushthank you.  When I got home I asked Daddy if he’d told Gavin to say thank you, and he said, “Uh, no.”  When I mentioned this to Gavin this morning and he said, “Yeah, Daddy was trying to bum rush me out of there but I told him to wait a minute.”

Ha nice try Daddy Love.

At Rise: Don’t Drink Rainwater

Monday, February 5th 2018 – (Continued)

harvesting rainwater

AT RISE:  In the car to school, ClaraJane is regaling Mom and Brother with a story about one time at her cousins’ house when her baby doll was thirsty and she was SNEAKING out of bed to fetch her water.  Rainwater apparently.

CJ:    By the third time it was morning and Uncle Joe was up, and he saw me.  And HE said, ‘Better not drink rain water, it’s full of bird poop!’  [giggles]

Gavin:  Did you drink any of the water?

CJ:  No.  It was for Baby Doll.

Gavin:  Oh, and Baby Doll can drink anything?

CJ:  Uh, NOOO! [condescending tone]  She’s a DOLL?  Remember?  She can’t drink ANYTHING!  Don’t you know that?

Gavin:  Yeah I KNOW dolls can’t actually drink anything!  I was just being interested in your story, jeez!

Mom:  [Gently teases CJ for lambasting her listener for suspending his disbelief so well, we all have a great laugh, and I don’t care if this holds together as a legit funny anecdote or not because all that matters is I love them and #EvidenceTheyGetAlong.]

Parenting: Pause Button

Monday, February 5th 2018

Play Pause

Driving the kids to school early before my Parenting Class today, ClaraJane starts in on a thread about how one time she got a terrible night’s sleep; and it affected her dreams; and then she manipulated her dreams; and all this stuff happened; and, and, and.  I’m not sure where the story’s  going –or for how long– but meanwhile Gavin is waiting patiently to speak so after a while I say, “OK Pause! Gavin what did you have to say?”

Then Gavin starts in asking if I subscribe to the myth that at exactly 3am, video game hackers around the world can break into Roblox and Minecraft and take over everything, and, and, and.  Poor kid but that is a world about which I am simply unqualified to opine or –apparently– care.   I test my luck; “OK Pause!”  Pulling into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot I say, “You guys kept your end of the bargain getting ready early this morning, so what kind of donuts do you want?”

I figure if either of their recitatives are important they can resume them any time, and probably will.  Neither of them seemed to mind, and most importantly I was able to avoid officially shutting them down or cutting them off just because I happened to have neither the time nor the interest in their particular topics at that time.  After all I needed to get to my Parenting Class, lol.

And though twice be but a pattern, this sudden “PAUSE!” tool worked for me TWO TIMES already, so I am capturing it here that I may remember to try it, as needed, again.

Or maybe it was just the… luck of the donuts.

*sigh*
