Exploring Our New Middle School

September 3rd 2019

I have a Back-to-School Parent Trick I will gift you here.  It is a passport to the inside of your child’s classroom.  Better than flowers, or a gift card or a…  [shudders] mug.  For the mere price of our modest property taxes, and about maybe 30 bucks at CostCo… you can show up on the first day of school and get INTO your child’s classroom.  Just have cases of Kleenex, Clorox Wipes and hand sanitizer in your arms.  That’s it!  The teacher goes,  “My goodness!  Wow thank you!  Can you bring that in right over here?”

And voila.  There you are, inside!

And if you are new to the school –as I am to my son’s new Junior High– you can find out, like; WHERE the classroom is, WHO his teacher is,  WHAT she is like,  WHAT they will be learning there, WHO else is in the room and more!

To wit:

My son’s schedule and Social Studies class expectations:

I don’t yet know what are “Y chart behaviors.”

Sample’s of our school’s inclusive culture and spectacular diversity!!

I always swoon at the diversity of names in our community.  #Huzzah!

Even caught a glimpse of his new Spanish Teacher!

Our friend, the incomparable Ms. Oksana, frantically putting the finishing touches on her vibrant classroom.

Sample a taste of moving with the herd (deafening cacophony not available):

And in my case, Boy even comes over to check in with me (who, me?) for a moment… in front of classmates and everything!

Gavin the new sixth grader.  So dreamy!

I use the word “pride” very carefully, but I am *proud* of our Boy for choosing to approach this new chapter of school with preparedness, calm, optimism, a degree of hygiene, and curiosity.  (o;

Go BOY!  (I got your back.  I’m right here!  YOO-HOO!!  MOMMY LOVES YOOOOOO!!!!)

 😹

Tuesday, September 3rd 2019

3rd Grade & Junior High!

Back to work for all three of my charges. (o:

Q:  Whatever would I do without them for a few short hours in the first time in months?

A:  Numerous tasks around the schools, some refined back to school sourcing of needed items, and curate a jackpot trove of found books for them back at home.

Animal Husbandry with Olivia

Wednesday, August 14th 2019

AT RISE: Upon arrival to camp at Lovell’s Island, Niece Olivia immediately finds and adopts a snail.

Olivia: I need to build him a jail. Snail Jail. I wonder what I should name him?

[Later that night, during dinner at the campsite picnic table.]

Olivia: [Pensively]. I wonder where my turtle is?

Four Oberhausers: ???

Gavin: Your TURTLE?

Olivia: I mean snail! Oh! I should name him ‘Turtle’!

Aunt Jenny: ‘Turtle the Snail’?

Olivia: Yeah!

[Turtle the Snail is soon located on the camp furniture, poking his head and antennae all about quite charmingly. Olivia gives him a leaf.]

Turtle the Snail: !

Mom: [Slows down.]. I’m sorry Honey. I know it’s a… a crappy feeling.

Girl: STOP IT MOM! This isn’t the time to make poop jokes!

Mom: Oh, sorry. [Pause.] Really?

Girl: [Firmly] NO!

Mom: [Aims hand toward composting outhouse coming into view.] Alright Girl, now there’s your target! Now; GO infiltrate that building! Bring what you have to share, and deposit your package!

Girl: And get something in return. [Runs* ahead.] Which is an empty butt!

For What Purpose??

Tuesday, August 13th 2019

del purpose

My very intelligent, sweet, extremely articulate and cooperative (11 y/o) Boy successfully negotiated permission from me this morning to download Minecraft to his new computer.  I was actually glad to hear he wants to get back into it, on account of how it’s based on engineering and creativity, and without the violence.

After he went a few minutes over his allotted computer time today (currently at 90 minutes per day), we had a brief discussion about integrity and the difference between being on time or not.   We then negotiated his computer time to include an additional 5 minute “grace period” in order to “finish something up” as needed.  Great.

THEN, bless him, he asked if he could have “three more minutes” today.

♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠

Me:  For what?

Him:  To download this other game I’ve had my eye on.

Me:  “Um, OK, I don’t get it.  We JUST negotiated the addition of Minecraft this morning.  What’s up with this other game?”

Him:  [Honestly I didn’t listen very well and he didn’t offer up anything notably persuasive.]

Then, bless him, here is the lecture he got from his mom.

♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠

Me:  Look, as you know, I don’t even GET games.  WHY “games”?  For what??

Him:  Well, fun?

Me:  [Some grumpy ramblings, including:]  For what PURPOSE though??  For what kind of future is this helping you prepare?

Him:  Well, what purpose are cheese balls?  Or potato chips?

Me:  Right.  Just fun.  But those non-nutritious snacks are just a small entertaining part of a whole, constantly incoming relatively healthy diet!  Where are the other activities happening on your computer?  Did you practice your math today?  Or your typing?  Have you used your computer to make a movie?  What about writing something?

Him:  [Mumbling something incoherent and slinking away.]

del Purpose-venn-diagram

It’s not my goal to “defeat” my children in persuasive discourse.  I take no pleasure in that.  But it is very satisfying when you find yourself cutting to the quick of the matter.

It’s like the one significant time he got caught playing a “single shooter” game at school, and got some privileges revoked in accordance to the school’s Technology Agreement.  Sitting in the cafeteria, he very thoughtfully said to me;

♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠

Him:  OK.  Here’s my argument.  Almost EVERY KID in my class  -at least all those guys- play it [Roblocks].

Me:  Yes honey!  Yes.  That is true.  And that is a truth that is happening in your childhood.  And there’s nothing we can do about that.  But what I want to know is, how many of their parents are studying healthy brain development in kids?  That’s what I want to know.  If there ARE any, or any evidence it’s healthy for you, I’d love to hear all about it.

Him:  […]

♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠     ♠

Shoot, score, win.

Again, not happy to defeat him.  But VERY happy any time to find my footing, in a way that is clear; and in accordance with a higher power, such as science, health and life preparedness.

Poor kid!

Anyway, another imperfect “Sacred Mundane” blog post registered.

Onward we go.

But first;

Love = Time

Sunday, August 4th 2019

Love = Time.

The simple equation that kids understand most profoundly.

How lucky am I to have a Boy who wants to spend time with his Mamma!

May I always appreciate and honor this inestimable blessing, however and whenever it occurs!

In this case, we ended up playing “Cat Pictionary” with the family instead, and then successfully rescheduling to this morning, where we played with his amazing cardboard pinball machine.

And FYI, a sample of Cat Pictionary:

“Walking the plank” and “Cutting the umbilical cord,” respectively.

Amen, praise be and more to come!

3-Year-Olds National Security Threats to the United States

July 30th 2019

I will never forgive this administration -or those who support it- for this torture of our most vulnerable families.

Rep. Ted Lieu Plays Videos of Separated Families for Border Patrol Chief Brian Hastings | NowThis

That the fragile fear of losing white majority privilege could result in such torture as this is something I don’t expect to ever understand.

Just the mere torture of “OTHER” peoples’ *brown* children, miright?

This is how our *American* tax dollars are being used.

And the white folks of privilege say… NOTHING

With overpowering, deafening, silence.
