Ta da! Arriving home from the best family visit imaginable, with the best souvenirs imaginable … sure feels good.
The kids survived their ordeal being chauffeured through the night somehow:
As for “souvenirs,” holy smokes. Look what Uncle Roger tied to our car:
This CHRISTMAS TREE!
Such a thrill. And it’s HUGE, like the heartland from which it came. (Thanks Roger!!)
AND, get this, look what stowed away
home with us from Rolling Acres Farm. Introducing the newest, youngest, fuzziest, most recently irresistible member of our flamly; KITTEN!
That is a whole story in itself, involving several days of slowly convincing Daddy, culminating in his final surrender when he grumbled, “SO LONG AS I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.”
Gavin’s arguments started with, “It would be bringing a part of our Ohio Family home with us!” And the cousins assert she will otherwise surely get eaten by coyotes, just like their poor cat Ike, rest his soul.
Here’s most of ClaraJane’s argument:
The kids are insisting her name is “Moonlight,” in spite of my insistence that was the name of *my* first kitten ever (“No Mom we thought of it ourselves!“). The decision was inspired last night moments after pulling out of the Ohio farm driveway into the pitch blackness of Black Horse Road, when Gavin said of our brand new pitch black kitten in the dark; “I wish I could see her!” So they named her Moonlight, and sang to her instead;
After that she was a napping angel for the *13* hour trek home. Within minutes of inspecting her indoor home surroundings in Cambridge, Kitten repeatedly rubs against ClaraJane’s leg to let us know in no uncertain terms this is EXACTLY what she’s been dreaming of.
(Also; Nom Nom Nom.)
Auntie Janelle confirms this kitten has never acted like a barn kitty, in spite of having in fact been born in a barn. To remove all doubt, Kitten brandishes expert operation of her first litter box with a flourish of city kitty panache:
[“Did I really need to know that?” you ask.
Yes, you did.
“Is nothing sacred?”
Why yes, in fact here at CircusKitchen.com, everything (that is otherwise mundane) is sacred! Just be glad I didn’t include a shot of the business end of the cat doing her business.]
Needless to say I *may* be blogging deliriously sleep deprived, but DH is already passed out so there is no one here to stop me. And needless to say we’re all happy. Except perhaps for the cats we actually already have. The poor dears will have to adjust.
“But I’m still your favorite, right?”
Apres Thanksgiving 2015
Rolling Acres Farm, Somerset Ohio
Alas the whole reason we went to Ohio in the first place. Here, to help me kids sort them all out and remember who’s who in the foreseeable interim, they are.
Grandpa Paul & Grandma Sue:
No photo could capture how big their hearts are.
To distinguish between the two Paul’s during this visit, Sure and I conspired to call Paul Sr. “Old Paul,” since my DH (who is the tallest) was always known in his family as “Little Paul.” (“NOooo!” his children protested every time about this moniker for their dad, “He’s TALL Paul!”)
In any case, here are my DH Paul’s sister, JANELLE & Co, who live next door:
JANELLE, DARRYL, Julia (14), Claire (11) & Alicia (9) ♡♡♡♡♡
Paul’s brother PETE & Co., whose home is nearby (though the kids are all adulting now):
PETE (back left) & ANNA (front center), plus Joseph (robotics engineer) & his wife Jessica (horse lover, far right), Silas (army veteran and professional welder near Chicago, left) and dear culinary Jane. This image also features a suspicious looking stowaway. (:
Next up, brother ROGER & his crew, who live not far, on the tree farm:
MISSY, ROGER, 2 y/o Laura and Jackson, who just turned 15. (:
Here is Paul’s sister NANCY & all hers. I know from Facebook they are super good at lining up for a photo, so I didn’t feel too bad asking, and it was great to see in person:
Ok NANCY is 2nd in from the left, next to JIM, holding down the sole male position in this crew. Then from left it’s Emily (H.S. junior), the infectious Marissa (12 y/o), Leah (college sophomore in biochemical engineering) and Lauren (college sophomore in mechanical engineering). [I look forward to confirming the info on the latter two {○:).
Not shown, the late SARAH‘s kids Megan (who’s getting married next summer). But here is and Drew, who did grace us with his Braveheart impersonation during this visit:
Also not present this time, BETH and her crew from Iowa (COWBOY TROY, Alison –who-married-Anthony-and-had-Cora- Clayton and Knute).
One other brother I’ve never met.
And finally, AMY in England wit DAVID aand their girls Katie (?6 y/o) and Grace (?3 y/o).
So, once upon a time, Paul Senior and *Jane* had:
David,
Beth,
Peter,
Nancy,
Roger,
Sarah,
“Little” Paul (1971),
at which point unfortunately Jane died of cancer.
Later, amazingly, *Sue* found her way to this substantial family after which she and Paul had:
Janelle and
Amy.
There are some amazing stories in there. I hope to relay some here. In the meantime, here’s a whole mess of these characters under one roof.
Lastly here again is “Little” PAUL and his crew after driving home all night to Boston after visiting them all.
Whew!
In addition to the astounding blessings we have and the things our Boy is contemplating asking for Christmas, I’ve asked him to think about what we can also do for others who are not so fortunate. This is what he just told his Daddy and I as we hit the road here tonight for the long ride home Bostonway from Ohio;
“1. The power to make gun control laws.
“2. To make all poor, all homeless, all refugees and all hungry people have a nice back
“3. The power to make the world use solar power and electricity more.
“4. For there to be no more terrorists and things like that.
“5. To make the whole world have peace.
“Those are all the global problems, right? …Oh yeah;
“6. To have all the children in the world whose parents can’t afford to give them an education, have an education.
“7. For people to start composting more and recycling more.”
* * * *
He also just said, “Daddy, one of the most harshest stories I could ever think of… is Jesus. I’m glad they don’t use that kind of punishment anymore.”

When you’re an “old” cowboy with a *huge* heart, you get your grandkids up on a horse. But first, breakfast.
Then, it’s off to the barn:
Saddle up:
And git!
Gavin tries out “King” in the ring:
ClaraJane gets on “Precious.”
And tests the breaks.
A bit more around the ring, with Alicia riding bareback on Dakota:
All systems are go and we are RELEASED into the wild blue yonder:
Freedom! (;
ClaraJane discovers she *loves* to trot:
As such, at one point the saddle lists slightly to the side, and Clarita bounces right down to the ground. Here she is an instant before impact (yes that’s the kind of mother I am):
I pick her up and begin to coddle her before coaching on the importance of gettin’ back up there.
“Do you want to go see Grandma Sue?” I ask at first.
“No,” she says plaintively, “I want to get back on.” And so she does.
Once back at the ranch, ClaraJane declared she really likes Precious:
“Because she really cooperates!”
ClaraJane isn’t the only one who enjoyed a wild adventurous ride:
Gavin: “YEEEE–HAW!!!”
Horse: “Is that… corn?”
♡ ♡ ♡
Thank you Grandma Sue and “Old” Grandpa Paul!
We will cherish these memories forever.

By the time we get up the kids are already navigating Grandma Sue through the paces.
With both regular AND chocolate whipped cream for their pancakes.
The kids and I fall in love with this irresistible kitten, “Nia.”
Then, to their cousins, the kids are OFF.
“Old” Paul tells stories while “Little” Paul gets to work…
With his artistry:
Sue rejoices at the newfound asset in her kitchen.
More stories and work, (Richard Jacobson) stories and work:
Bon Appétit:
Now You May Eat:
Kids Table:
Julia, Alicia, ClaraJane, Gavin, Claire
After the meal, in lieu of the traditional post-prandial stroll, a sunset thrill ride around the farm in the ATV Ranger,

Then more family:
Gavin, Jackson, Roger, Little Paul
Then fire and music and more fire and singing and overall magic oh my.

Thurs Nov. 26th 2015
Grandpa Paul invites us to walk out to the parsnip patch:
Et voila:
Our boy tries his hand at farming (ha):
On the way back, Gavin challenges Paul to a contest to see who can keep their hands in the cold cold trough the longest:
Guess who won:
Last one out gets to finish cooking Thanksgiving dinner!
Freshest parsnips you ever had. ♡
Post Script: Now a week later in December, my Loving Husband has just informed me that these are, “Regrettably, TURNIPS, not parsnips. Parsnips look like carrots.” OK well that shows you what I know!
