Birdie Sanders Put a Bird On It

#BirdieSanders

I for one don’t know if I will ever get enough of this magical moment.  I actually imagine this will be remembered as an historical moment in history for generations to come, but only time will tell.  In the middle of the most insane presidential election season in modern history, we have a unicorn running for president.  He is an HONEST man with INTEGRITY, GRIT, COMPASSION a MORAL COMPASS and decades of hard core experience to back it up. At the very MOMENT he is poised to OVERTAKE the opponent whom the corrupt media is trying to force upon us as the Democratic heir apparent, in the middle of one of his notoriously inspiring and wildly populous rallies… a little birdie steals the show.

I don’t know what is more amazing, the incredible serendipity and courageous whim bird’s antics or the BEAUTY of the Beautiful Man’s reactions.  Here;

1.  In the middle of talking about working hard at school, supporters get distracted by the antics of a little bird next to his podium and alert him to it:

screen-shot-2016-03-25-at-8-05-06-pm

He always seems to manage interruptions with aplomb.

2. Then he sees it and shares their enjoyment:

laughing

Gush I love that joyful laugh.

3.  He starts to refer to the bird when, POOF! It flits up to his podium, alighting right on the slogan; “A FUTURE TO BELIEVE IN.”

2016-03-26 06.05.31

He waves his arms in amazement, as if with the synchronized flourish of a magician.

4.  Pure joy:

2016-03-26 06.06.19

The crowd goes W-I-L-D!  (Punny but true.)

5.  More joy:

2016-03-26 06.06.56

What a moment.  Yes, let the animals consult our politicians!!

6.  The Good Senator yields the floor:

2016-03-26 06.07.36

“I’m workin’ with ya here Buddy.”

7. He raises his finger to make a point:

2016-03-26 06.08.04

8. The bird takes flight:

2016-03-26 06.09.17

Then with the same consistency, moral courage and grit he has displayed his whole career he says, “I know it doesn’t look like it, but that bird is really a DOVE asking us for WORLD PEACE.  NO MORE WARS!”

I mean seriously, WHO SAYS THAT!??  No American politician on the national stage does.  No war mongering manufacturer does.  No media outlet or corporation does.  You gotta be CRAZY to say that.  It’s political suicide!   Or you gotta be a Unicorn.  You gotta be  #BERNIESANDERS.

Here’s the video:

I believe!!!

Good Friday Morning Adventure

Friday, March 25th 2016

2016-03-25 11.11.27

For this “Good Friday” off from school, and because of Baby Mary’s proclivity for “adventure” in the morning times, we arranged a family get-together around that.  And though none of my four managed to even change out of pajamas, it was a lovely party!

Nonstop Pre-Easter All-Access Baby-Kitty-Bunny Action

In the midst of all this there was even a moment I’d been hoping for; sitting at the table with coffee and grownups while the children idly play OVER THERE.

The Moment I'd Been Hoping For

Trampoline-Baby-Balloon-Girls-Chess-Boys-Little-Bike Synchronicity

This is “all” they “need.”  Such attainment never lasts long but it is always SWEET. ♥

We also discussed Good Friday and what its about.  What I told my kids when they asked the day before went something like this:

KIDS:  What is ‘Good Friday?’

ME:  Well, in the Christian Religion, they believe Jesus died for our SINS, and if you BELIEVE that, you get to go to Heaven.  So this Friday is “Good” because that is the day he died.

G:  How did he die?

ME:  Yeah, well, they nailed him to a cross.

CJ:  WITH REAL NAILS!?

ME:  Yes.  It’s horrible.  They drove real nails through his hands and feet to tack him up to a cross.

CJ:  What’s a cross?

ME:  It’s a big pole with a cross beam like this, so his feet were on the vertical part and his arms were outstretched on the cross part.  That is why you see Christian people wearing cross necklaces as jewelry to show they believe Jesus died for them so they get to go to Heaven.  But guess what!

THEM:  What?

ME:  Unlike everyone ELSE…  for the rest of us, when you die, you die, and that’s it.  But not Jesus!   After he died on the cross, they took his body up into a cave and covered the entrance with big boulders.  Then three days later his mother and some other ladies went to visit his body only to find one of the big boulders moved aside!  Then Jesus POPPED out and said, “BE NOT AFRAID!  IT IS I, JESUS, AND I’M BACK!”  Or something like that.  No one is really sure.  And that’s what EASTER is about three [2] days after Good Friday.  To celebrate Jesus coming back to life!

THEM:  Oh.

It was a rare treat to discuss these things.*  My Mom -having been both scarred by her erstwhile upbringing as a Southern Baptist AND being protective of her grandkids- REALLY did not want any mention of “sin.”    I respectfully begged to differ with the argument that anything that is made taboo becomes more intriguing.  I couched “sin” as basically; NOBODY’S PERFECT!  And if you are Christian, that means God views you as less than a dirty dish rag until you accept in your heart that Jebus died for you and that is the ONLY recourse to eternal salvation.  Lovely story!

*We clarified that Jesus did not “pop” out of the cave.  He was missing and then reappeared some unspecified time later… and then eventually ascended into heaven.  Or maybe he did that on Easter.  Apparently there are many authors on this story so there are a lot of variations!!!

Mom also found this image I found online to be gruesome:

2016-03-25 16.35.54

Thank you Jesus.  Hi five!

I however find this no less gruesome than the story itself.  No wait actually I find it MUCH less gruesome.

In any case Mom also reminded us that we have her to thank for sparing us the internalization of such scarring doctrine.  True!

I also have her to thank for raising me to think for myself.  For realz.

THANK YOU MOM!

Hi five?

She’s So Fashion

March 2016

(On the way home from school with Arrian)

Because I cannot get enough of her and her spirit and leopard spots and stripes and bandaids and leather jacket and tutus:

Bandaid Face

Having put on the bandaid in the morning, this series was taken *after* school.  She wore it on her face the whole day!

Like me I bet that bandaid could not even get enough of that face.

Comedy Meets Classical – Leroy Anderson

Just encountered this wonderful and hilarious piece where COMEDY meets CLASSICAL MUSIC meets WRITING.  Love it!

Le Machina de Escriber [4:33]:

Turns out this was written by Leroy Anderson, born right here in CAMBRIDGE no less (1908-1975), growing up studying music, attending New England Conservatory and Harvard, becoming fluent in many languages, serving in the Army during the Korean War and writing many wonderful pieces (such as the famous “Sleigh Ride“), and this one:

“Plink, Plank Plunk!” [2:56]:

And, thinking of the trumpet players in my life, A Trumpeter’s Lullaby [3:59]:

I Get What You’re Saying

Next time you don’t know what to say to a friend in need, perhaps try one of these:

I GET WHAT YOU’RE SAYING.
That sounds rough, thank you for telling me.
Is there anything I can do?
I hear you.
I know it feels rough right now, but you will get through this.
No, you’re GREAT.
Remember, things feel like this sometimes… it’s not forever.
Have faith; I know you can handle this.
I get you!
You got this.
I got your back.
Would you like some chocolate?
How about some wine?
Think you have time for a hot bath anytime soon?
I hear you, and I’m sorry.
I get that, but I also know it will be okay.
I believe in you!

“Calm Upset People with Empathy, Attention and Respect” (“E.A.R. Statements” at mediate.com).
eg:
EMPATHY: “I can hear how upset you are.”
ATTENTION: “Tell me what’s going on.”
RESPECT: “I respect your efforts.”

Supper SNAFU

Wednesday, March 16th 2016

After Gavin’s Tae Kwon Do class on Wednesdays, it’s almost kids’ bedtime but we still need to eat.  Back at home on this night, Daddy was going to feed CJ early and get her to bed, so I felt there’d be no problem with some extra Mother-Son connection time in taking Boy out to dinner.

So I text Daddy, and he writes back (twice!):

2016-03-16 22.48.06

Dang!  There I am at the incomparable Midde East Restaurant, having a wonderful time with my son, except for this distasteful sense of letting Dear Hubsand down.

I try to get myself off the hook:

2016-03-16 22.49.20

(Gavin weighs in)

Then I notice this on Facebook:

2016-03-16 23.05.04

(Guess whose FB reaction was “Sad”?)

A beautiful fish dinner!  I didn’t know he was making a beautiful fish dinner!?  Arghh!

So I’m honest:

2016-03-16 23.06.37

(Trying to embrace my situation.)

Next I see a different post; another blow on Facebook:

2016-03-16 23.11.24

Dumplings, fried whitting, steamed broccoli, edamame, rice.

Public shaming!  I fight back:

2016-03-17 21.08.58

He blocks:

2016-03-16 23.21.09

See what i did there

What can I say?:

IMG_20160317_210910

(getting schooled on FB)

It’s not over.  Another blow:

2016-03-16 23.00.25

#ouch that face

Below the belt!  Public shaming I can handle.  But this?

Naught left but revenge:

2016-03-16 20.06.38

“Sowwy!” says Gavin

We are trying to finish up when the restaurant owner shows up and –being notoriously friendly and unable to resist children–  fawns all over us and insists on giving us dessert.  Thereupon Gavin delivers a final message in two parts:

IMG_20160317_212545

(complimentary homemade baklava)

2016-03-16 23.16.25

(his belly)

Ask anyone and they can confer I don’t believe in using devices during dinner… EXCEPT for great exceptions of course.  In this case our family was accidentally separated, but thanks to the technology of a socially engineered virtual world we were still able to fight across the dinner table same as ever.  (o;

Needless to say I brought the baklava home to DH as a peace offering.  And he totally forgave me.

Somewhat.

PS:  As to the embarrassment of technological ease and food security we enjoy among other privileges, for now I try to partly deserve them by celebrating them here.

PPS:  I asked Gavin where he learned “Welp,” and naturally he’d read it in a book… about a cat named Mr. Pants.  (!?)

PPPS:  Here is a delightful 4-minute video of the infectious owner Mr. Nabil Sater and his legendary Middle East Restaurant & Nightclub:

OF NOTE:   The Middle East had been Gavin’s pick this night.  (Independently owned, fresh food, unique atmosphere, funky vibe, chill waitstaff and rock bands playing downstairs; what’s not to like?)  The Middle East is also significant insofar it was there that Paul once revived our then-floundering courtship by SHOWING UP one fateful night I was performing Open Mic.   It must have been late August of 2006.  A story for another day!

Many Times a Million

March 11th-ish, 2016

Ya parenting is tough.  And sometimes it is so very rough:

2016-03-08 17.30.34-1

Wait, HOW much??

So, things with Gavin –while typically sensationally awesome– have sometimes been stupidly rough.  I’ll spare the details but suffice it to say it has involved the making of regrettable choices in some of his interpersonal affairs lately… ahem.

And to my Dear Gavin Boy:  If/when you are reading this in the future, darling, please forgive me sharing this.  It’s OKAY to look at the ugly along with the good and the bad.  That’s life!

I felt strange and a little guilty for documenting the above regrettableness… but I’m thankful for it.  Even though it hurt me at the time, I’ve already been able to gain distance and perspective on it.  Like… it’s kind of hilarious.  Also?  According to the professionals, this means he REALLY loves me, AND feels secure enough to rebel against me like that.  YAY!  I must be doing something right.  Like, TOTALLY NAILING this parenting thing.  I mean, LOOK at how accurately he is punctuating 7 digit numbers… in 2nd Grade.  HA. (o;

Here’s more:

2016-03-10 11.22.17

“Over the weekend I lost about half my toys and had a horrible time.  My sister pinched me and then I kicked her and yelled at her and she stated crying.”

Honestly, how wonderful that he could express this, right?   His O.T.* Specialist pulled me aside to let me know  (praise be to the I.E.P.**).  Her reaching out to me was perfect timing because when the quotient of WTF-Kid-Stuff tips the scales, as Parent you open Ye Olde Tool Box, seek out every professional in your purview and ask them, basically, “WTF?”  She -the O.T.-  was on my list, and she got to me first.

[*O.T. = Occupational Therapy.  **I.E.P.= Individualized Education Plan.]

And wouldn’t you know since turning my focus squarely in the face (such a cute face)… he has magically improved already a lot (although not completely for sure).

I finish this post from the parental sidelines of Tae Kwon Do class (an excellent place to throw kicks and punches), and leave you with some artwork he has since created with his Dad:

2016-03-16 15.57.52-1.jpg

Super diagrammed weapons; one shooting clouds at an erupting volcano…?

He also created some artwork I *do* relate to:

2016-03-10 12.26.39-1

Trump Stinks!  Trump means ‘fart’ in Britain so he stinks!  Tax the rich!  Eye heart Bernie.  Bernie 100%  Trump 0%

Bless him.  (Bernie Sanders AND my Boy.)

Parenting: ‘Taint a destination, it’s a journey that’s fo sho.

Fun with Ersatz Journalism & Pie

Monday, March 14th 2016

To thine own self be true, no?  One example of scintillating adventure for me these days is sleuthing around as a self-ascribed elementary school journalist.  Here is a nibble of my most recently submitted repast for our kids’ school paper (Note that’s my daughter directly below the performer’s outstretched hand there):

2016-03-14 10.50.49
PHOTO:  Maggie Whalen shows Children’s House students some of the ways she constructed the set to her production of Goldie Locks and the Three Bears.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE THROUGH CHILDREN’S PUPPET THEATRE

On Monday, March 14th 2016, Maggie Whalen of Magpie Puppet Theatre brought her talents to our Children’s House students.  By singing some sweet songs, Ms. Maggie and the students were able to “wake up” the puppets to perform Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

On a charming set, and with audience participation, Mama, Papa & Baby bear each model healthy activities such as exercise, wholesome cooking, setting the table and making the beds.  And even though Baby Bear doesn’t *like* porridge, Mama Bear teaches him to *pretend* they like it, “because Papa Bear worked hard fixing it for us.”

When the porridge is too hot, the bears go walking in the woods whereupon Goldie Locks –straying from her task of picking blueberries– enters their home uninvited, eats their food, breaks their chair and falls asleep in their bed.   When she awakens to upset bears, she runs back home to her mother.

Importantly, when Mom finds out what happened, she tells Goldilocks that her behavior was inappropriate and you shouldn’t enter people’s homes and help yourself to their things without asking.

“I’m sorry mom,” says Goldilocks.

“I know we all make mistakes,” says the wise Mom, “What’s important is how we fix them.”

Mom sends Goldilocks back to the Bears’ house to apologize, bring some nice blueberry pancakes they made and to fix the broken chair together.  In the end, they sit down to feast together and Papa Bear sings a final refrain of his bluesy breakfast song with some tasty licks on a tiny guitar.

Afterwards the students were invited to ask some questions, and to see up close how some of the props and set had been constructed.  For example:

Q: Why did Goldilocks go to the bears’ house?  A: She was curious!

Q: Why did Baby Bear say he made the beds all by himself [even though someone helped him]?  A:  I guess he wanted to impress his mother with the good work he did; it was a little lie.

Q: Did Goldilocks make the pancakes for the bears?  A: Yes with her mother, as a gift.

This performance of MagpiePuppets.com was made possible with all our individual contributions through the generous work of Friends of Tobin.  Thank you Friends of Tobin!   Extra special thank you to Sachi Rhodes who helped promote, oversee and stage manage the whole production.

Oh man.  As so often happens when I am ensnared in a vice… a loved one up and encourages me!

2016-03-14 12.45.10

*Sigh.*  I started to tell her not to encourage me, but then I thought better… and submitted THIS:

On March 14th (3.14), Head Chef Paul helped us celebrate math with his “Pi” shirt:

2016-03-14 07.43.46-1

Happy Pi Day!

What is “Pi” you ask?   Pi is the value of a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter, which always comes out to 3.14159265358979323846… (the digits go on forever without repeating). This value is represented by the lowercase Greek letter called “pi” that looks like this:  π

Pi

Thanks Chef Paul!  Do you think next year on 3.14 we can do pi math on actual PIE?  Yum!

Super Tuesday – Shit Gettin’ Realz Yo

TUESDAY, March 1st 2016

2016-03-01 11.34.23

Today is primary election voting day in 13 states including this one, Massachusetts.

I can only hope that when you are reading this, it is far enough in the future that the Drumpf plague that is overtaking the political climate in this country has receded into a footnote.  But as I write it is a pernicious, spray tanned, flaming, talking trash-can mucous-sac of cancer.

AND, after a year of slogging it out online and *learning* from left and right leaning players, here’s what I screamed into the void today, for your viewing delight:

Jenny TheJuggler    3 hrs · Cambridge ·
Q: WHAT YEAR IS IT IN THE “U.S.A.”?
Political rallies are being segregated; the *KKK* are holding violent rallies; NAZIS are back, welding knives; JOURNALISTS are being physically attacked; MINORITIES are being quietly executed; ABORTION rights are going before an incomplete Supreme Court; VOTING RIGHTS are being suppressed; WELFARE and SOCIAL SECURITY are under attack; WOMEN don’t receive EQUAL PAY; the FIRST AMENDMENT is in danger of being restricted; the SECOND AMENDMENT is in danger of being expanded; our MILITARY budget is 54% of our budget but almost none of it is allocated to taking care of our VETERANS; the ex-VP made $40BILLION on the last dozen years of made-up wars that has cost or country $7 TRILLION; presidential candidates want to force women to have babies WHILE taking away HEALTH CARE and food subsidies; FOOD which is being poisoned by the ONE corporation to which the government has given most of the production (Monsato) even as it kills the very thing we NEED to produce food (BEES); Congress won’t approve a livable wage for those who WORK, but legislate unlimited pay raises for themselves (WHILE refusing to do their jobs); meanwhile the MOST PROFITABLE banks and corporations pay little to NO TAX, *while* receiving REFUNDS off the backs of the American people and the MEDIA serves as the MARKETING ARM of the whole operation, successfully sedating us with Kardashian-football, questioning whether SCIENCE IS REAL and moreover, convincing us that the culprit is the most disenfranchised among us -“immigrants!”- as if we didn’t all hijack this sacred place a few generations ago when we murdered it’s 100 Million inhabitants.
But let me guess, “YOU came out of a vagina in Detroit, so that makes you ***special***!!!” And speaking of vaginas, how about let’s “make history” and vote for a politician who -although sporting one on the outside- is just another purveyor of ESTABLISHMENT arrangements on the INSIDE (not a bad person such as GOP Cancers on the right, just a good ol’ fashioned traditional POLITICIAN). The vagina? Window dressing.
Do I hate America? No I love my country and especially the planet it inhabits, including most of the people and all of the creatures on it; unless you are pro-ISIL or pro-Drumpf, in which case I wish for YOUR “GOD” to have mercy upon your soul for the very the hatred and destruction you perpetuate.
I’m voting for the ONE candidate of constancy and valor, who fully practices integrity, compassion and fairness to all human beings.
‪#‎BernieSanders2016‬

Here is some of the best of what the professional commentators (who by no coincidence are also comedians) have to offer:
John Oliver’s epoch Drumpf take down (it’s just SO GOOD) [22 minutes]:
Samantha Bee’s indictment of the sleeping idiocracy (from which I am finally beginning to AWAKEN) [7 minutes]:

There’s so much more but I leave it here with this image of my son helping me fill out my ballot:
