Civics .101

2016-11-16-18-21-29

Last night at our elementary school’s “International Night” celebration of all our different cultures, instead of a cultural table, I ran one called “Civics 101,” even if “Civics .101” is more apt.

Gavin helped me letter this poster, which is the whole premise of my activity:

2016-11-16-18-21-06

Welcoming visitors to the table, I would ask them;

QUESTION 1:  “Do you know what the ‘government‘ is?”   Little kids wouldn’t know, medium kids would struggle with a definition, and some older kids would erupt with, “Executive! Legislative! Judicial!”

ANSWER 1Exactly, I’d tell them.  “‘Government‘ is the people in charge of all the rules for our city, state and country!”  This usually landed fine.   Sometimes I’d add, “You’ve probably heard of some of the jobs in the government like ‘president,’ ‘governor,’ or ‘mayor,’ but there are LOTS and LOTS of jobs in government.”

QUESTION 2:   “And do you know what kind of people have those jobs?”

Usually kids did not know.  Although one amazing girl said, “Kind people?”  It was heartbreaking to not be able to affirm her guess.  “Fair people?” she ventured?  “Not necessarily,” I said, “Although that is what I am going to wish for.”

ANSWER 2:  “Nope;  REG-U-LAR people!”  I told them.  “Regular people like YOU, like ME, like your little BROTHER, like your MOM… all of us!”

QUESTION 3“AND,” I’d continue, “When you grow up, do you know WHO gets to be in charge of the rules?”

Usually they didn’t know.  And here comes the pay dirt:

ANSWER 3: “YOU DO!”  I’d tell them.  Time after time I got to experience this exhilarating moment witnessing these children light up and their jaws drop open in astonishment to learn that THEY can be in charge when they grow up!

2016-11-16-18-20-30

QUESTION 4:   “And that is why I’m here to ask what are YOUR hopes, dreams or ideas for how the world should be!?  If you can write anything on one of these cards, you can choose a sticker and earn a BADGE for being a STAR PARTICIPANT!

2016-11-16-18-22-37

I promised the principal I wouldn’t get political, but of course being a rebel I included a slightly subversive message by using a SAFETY PIN to affix everyone’s badges (which if you haven’t heard is one way to display that you are a “SAFE ALLY” in the face of all the unthinkable hate crimes that have arisen since the election of that total fucking orange piece of shit for U.S. “president”).

Gavin graced our table with his assistance when he wasn’t flying around the event himself.

2016-11-16-17-29-40

The event includes a massive international potluck and at one point I drank in the sight of him stuffing a veggie sushi roll in his face as he whooshed by our table with nary a glance my way.  Glorious.

FINAL POINT:  When pinning on the badge I say, “Even if we’re not in the government or too young to vote, we can still tell them how we want things to be, and it’s their job to listen to us!  That’s why SAYING what you want tonight makes you a STAR PARTICIPANT.  Hi five!”

STAR Participants included students, teachers, parents, guests and Assistant Principal Joey.

2016-11-16-18-20-44

Hopes, Dreams & Ideas proudly displayed out front.

The cards themselves covered an array of possibilities, including our best friends’ kids who said, “MORE STAR WARS” and “there should be such thing as apple pie day,” respectively.  (No doubt they’d win a lot of votes with this platform.)  ♥

Other hopes, dreams and ideas include:

  • Peaceful
  • I hope that I can be free
  • I want country to be nice to each other
  • I hope there will be peace in the future!
  • No one would stereotype any one and think of them as “weird”
  • More money to go around for people that are poor
  • That everyone will be kind to all.
  • That nobody is ever lonely
  • I wish that Everybody could be the same
  • To not Litter!
  • United Countries of EARTH
  • Free College Education
  • DonlD wont win
  • I hope that in the future the world will have good leaders
  • I do Not wuNt DONOlD CHRUMP to BEE MEaN
  • I want clinton to be presebint for ever and ever.
  • I want clinton to be presudent for ever and ever
  • I HOPE THE KIDS OF HTE FUTURE ARE HAPPY!
  • to be a great country
  • PePole be kind
  • [smiley face drawing]
  • That we live in a world that loves everyone
  • I hope that the United States of America will cooperate with out war
  • Instead of “America First,” I hope our nation’s motto becomes “The Planet First.”
  • Everyone can stay here!

And possibly my very favorite of all:

2016-11-18-09-25-19

“Be nice.”

It was exhilarating to be the bearer of this news to these kids, and the idealist in me is willing to be heartened with hoped for the future when I listen to their vision for the future.

I mean really, perhaps all we need to remember is:  BNIS.

#NoDAPL National Day of Action

Tuesday, November 15th 2016

2016-11-15-13-07-12

In response to the CONTINUED unlawful development of the Dakota Access Pipeline through indigenous land by the shameful Energy Transfer Partners Company*, a National Day of Action has been called by the Water Protectors at Standing Rock:

National Day of Action at Army Corps of Engineers [2:01]

I joined a small coalition of protesters outside the regional Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters in Concord, Mass., where I was honored to meet among other people a woman who is Lakota Sioux  and a member of Standing Rock:

2016-11-15 #NoDAPL Demonstration in Concord, MA [3:42]:

*The latest update as I understand is that there is a temporary halt on the permits for ETP to continue construction, but that on ELECTION DAY (11/8/2016) they made a quiet announcement they were going to continue -ILLEGALLY- starting December 2nd anyway.  Meanwhile scores of individuals face overwhelming legal fees after being unlawfully arrested -and assaulted by attack dogs, pepper spray, rubber bullets and degrading lock up conditions (strip searched and denied clothing while penned up in dog cages)- for protesting peacefully on their own land.  It seems an entire herd of bison have also been rounded up and sold off for slaughter.  Meanwhile that abomination of a “president-elect” is not only a direct *investor* and beneficiary of the pipeline (having accepted campaign contributions to the tune of $100K), he is also a climate-change denier who has pledged to green light the development of all fossil fuel infrastructure projects going forward.

As in, O.M.F.G. how can this be happening?

2016-11-15-13-05-12

As the Standing Rock Sioux defend their water and land, they defend water and land for ALL of us.  Here are TEN WAYS YOU CAN HELP THE STANDING ROCK SIOUX:

Some methods may be more effective than others, but the key is utilizing multiple avenues of resistance in an effort to provide full spectrum resistance against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

1. Call North Dakota governor Jack Dalrymple at 701-328-2200. When leaving a message stating your thoughts about this subject please be professional.

2. Sign the petition to the White House to Stop DAPL: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/…/stop-construction…

3. Donate to support the Standing Rock Sioux at http://standingrock.org/…/standing-rock-sioux-tribe…/

4. Donate items from the Sacred Stone Camp Supply List: http://sacredstonecamp.org/supply-list/

5. Call the White House at (202) 456-1111 or (202) 456-1414. Tell President Obama to rescind the Army Corps of Engineers’ Permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline.

6. Contribute to the Sacred Stone Camp Legal Defense Fund: https://fundrazr.com/d19fAf

7. Contribute to the Sacred Stone Camp gofundme account: https://www.gofundme.com/sacredstonecamp

8. Call the Army Corps of Engineers and demand that they reverse the permit: (202) 761-5903

9. Sign other petitions asking President Obama to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. Here’s the latest to cross my desk – https://act.credoaction.com/sign/NoDAPL

10. Call the executives of the companies that are building the pipeline:

a. Lee Hanse Executive Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 800 E Sonterra Blvd #400 San Antonio, Texas 78258 Telephone: (210) 403-6455 lee.Hanse@energytransfer.com

b. Glenn Emery Vice President Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 800 E Sonterra Blvd #400 San Antonio, Texas 78258 Telephone: (210) 403-6762 glenn.Emery@energytransfer.com

c. Michael (Cliff) Waters Lead Analyst Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. 1300 Main St. Houston, Texas 77002 Telephone: (713) 989-2404 michael.Waters@energytransfer.com

The most effective means of showing support for this cause is to actively participate in protecting this sacred land. Anyone who is able to travel to the peaceful encampments is encouraged to do so. For those unable to make the journey to North Dakota, please utilize the alternate methods provided to show your support for the Standing Rock Sioux who have united over 100 tribes from across the U.S. Please join this effort to stop this pipeline, which desecrates sacred lands and has serious potential to damage or destroy the Standing Rock reservations lifeblood – its water.

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Boston Peace Rally with Gavin

Friday, November 11th 2016love_trumps_hate_sticker

So pleased my boy opted to accompany me to the Peace Rally in Boston on this day.

Fox News (in which the newscaster misquotes the theme of the rally): http://www.fox25boston.com/news/thousands-gather-in-boston-for-love-rally-after-trumps-election/466447851

BOSTON – Friday afternoon several hundred people have gathered on Boston Common to publicly object to the election of Donald Trump.
Friday evening’s event was being billed as both a “love rally” and a “peace rally,” not a protest.
Attendees were urged to “unite together to peacefully show all of those whom Donald Trump or his supporters have put down that we still care about them” and give them “an opportunity to have their voices be heard.”
“Unity and love and peace and how to come together and fight against this person that is now going to be our president that has been very oppressive to many groups of people,” one person at the rally said.
The really lasted from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and throughout the afternoon speakers talked about moving forward in a peaceful direction.
“Get behind him, not necessarily to support him in all that he does, but to push him in the direction we want him to go in. Because at the end of the day this is a democracy and that’s not something we can forget just because our side didn’t win,” one speaker said.

Trumpocalypse: False Equivalence News

November 2016

In the massive drive to find on WHOM to lay the blame for this unmitigated catastrophe, this adorbs video underscores exactly why I believe blame lies squarely on the shoulders of our flagrantly irresponsible, shameless corporate media (and its devotees so eager to assimilate every droplet):

How “False Equivalence” Ruins Trump-Clinton News Coverage [3:12]:

It’s so disgusting.  I am so ashamed;  of our media and our culture’s worship of it.

Trumpocalypse according to Aaron Sorkin

The Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Social Network and mastermind behind The West Wing reacts to Donald Trump being elected the 45th president of the United States in a moving letter written to his 15-year-old daughter Roxy and her mother Julia Sorkin.

NOVEMBER 9, 2016 8:52 PM

Well the world changed late last night in a way I couldn’t protect us from. That’s a terrible feeling for a father. I won’t sugarcoat it—this is truly horrible. It’s hardly the first time my candidate didn’t win (in fact it’s the sixth time) but it is the first time that a thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn has.

And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night—it was his supporters too. The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate. Men who have no right to call themselves that and who think that women who aspire to more than looking hot are shrill, ugly, and otherwise worthy of our scorn rather than our admiration struck a blow for misogynistic shitheads everywhere. Hate was given hope. Abject dumbness was glamorized as being “the fresh voice of an outsider” who’s going to “shake things up.” (Did anyone bother to ask how? Is he going to re-arrange the chairs in the Roosevelt Room?) For the next four years, the President of the United States, the same office held by Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., J.F.K. and Barack Obama, will be held by a man-boy who’ll spend his hours exacting Twitter vengeance against all who criticize him (and those numbers will be legion). We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world.

And the world took no time to react. The Dow futures dropped 700 points overnight. Economists are predicting a deep and prolonged recession. Our NATO allies are in a state of legitimate fear. And speaking of fear, Muslim-Americans, Mexican-Americans and African-Americans are shaking in their shoes. And we’d be right to note that many of Donald Trump’s fans are not fans of Jews. On the other hand, there is a party going on at ISIS headquarters. What wouldn’t we give to trade this small fraction of a man for Richard Nixon right now?

So what do we do?

First of all, we remember that we’re not alone. A hundred million people in America and a billion more around the world feel exactly the same way we do.

Second, we get out of bed. The Trumpsters want to see people like us (Jewish, “coastal elites,” educated, socially progressive, Hollywood…) sobbing and wailing and talking about moving to Canada. I won’t give them that and neither will you. Here’s what we’ll do…

…we’ll fucking fight. (Roxy, there’s a time for this kind of language and it’s now.) We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless. We don’t have majorities in the House or Senate but we do have representatives there. It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do. We make sure that the people we sent to Washington—including Kamala Harris—take our strength with them and never take a day off.

We get involved. We do what we can to fight injustice anywhere we see it—whether it’s writing a check or rolling up our sleeves. Our family is fairly insulated from the effects of a Trump presidency so we fight for the families that aren’t. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality—not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities. We stand up.

America didn’t stop being America last night and we didn’t stop being Americans and here’s the thing about Americans: Our darkest days have always—always—been followed by our finest hours.

Roxy, I know my predictions have let you down in the past, but personally, I don’t think this guy can make it a year without committing an impeachable crime. If he does manage to be a douche nozzle without breaking the law for four years, we’ll make it through those four years. And three years from now we’ll fight like hell for our candidate and we’ll win and they’ll lose and this time they’ll lose for good. Honey, it’ll be your first vote.

The battle isn’t over, it’s just begun. Grandpa fought in World War II and when he came home this country handed him an opportunity to make a great life for his family. I will not hand his granddaughter a country shaped by hateful and stupid men. Your tears last night woke me up, and I’ll never go to sleep on you again.

Love,

Dad

Trumpocalypse: I Was Wrong

Friday, November 11th 2016  (Veteran’s Day)

bad-politicians-good-people

I was wrong.

I was wrong to implicate any demographic of voters for the outcome of this election.

My father-in-law is right, it is the NON-voters who created this chilling outcome.

2016-11-11-07-13-01

I was wrong to take a shot at a particular generation (“Baby Boomers”).  My mom is right and I clearly don’t know what I am talking about.

Maybe I shouldn’t have joked about death.  I may be comfortable talking about death but I know most aren’t.

I am wrong to implicate anyone else for my own ignorance.   It is no one’s fault but my own.

And I have been wrong in being blind to my own condescending liberal elitism, that is in part responsible for this Chump-elect backlash.

I don’t understand what is happening in this country.  But I am willing to look in the mirror.  And read and read and write and write and ask and ask.  And make mistakes.  And try again.

I hope I can earn forgiveness for these and other missteps in the aftermath of this unthinkable outcome.

Here’s a guy with a clue:

TRUMPOCALYPSE: My Bad

2016-11-10

TRUMPOCALYPSE Day Two:

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it right?  Is that why I witnessed ZERO political activism in my entire upbringing from childhood to adulthood?  I think the country was working good for them.   I think blacks, latinos, gays, muslims and other minorities as people of equal value with whites were literally NOT on a radar that I knew of.

I deeply apple-o-gize [4 seconds]:

Another Boomer I know has plans to absolutely wring hands until the next presidential election.

FOUR YEARS.  That’s a long time to do nothing for change.

I remember being a new parent at my kids’ school, noticing something I thought could work better and sharing the idea with a classroom parent.  She kept explaining to me that… the teacher can decide.  Around we go, me failing to get her on board with considering a new idea to help said teacher.  Finally I say, “OK so maybe… let’s wait?”

“Ah yes, good!” she smiles, pleased with the conclusion.  That settles it, and scene.

Needless to say I’ve never proposed any ideas to that one since.  (And now in fact there is a principal who is 100% open to productive input; we get to meet with her anytime and it’s no coincidence that the culture and performance of the school is A-MA-ZING, but I digress.)

Please be clear I am not angry and not trying to blame.  I’m just marveling at what I haven’t learned for so much of my life.  Like, civic engagement for example.

All the same, may we all continue to evolve ever more enlightened and  engaged.

Fast.

Like, NOW.

TRUMPOCALYPSE: Telling the Children

2016-11-09

The last apocalyptic disaster on American soil took place on 9/11 (2001).

Now we have 11/9 (2016).

1) Telling the Children:

Everyone is asking “How do we explain this to the children?”  Here is how I did:

2016-11-09 TRUMPOCALYPSE LiveFeed [6:25]:

Then I hugged the other mom at the bus stop and we shared a heaving cry.  (She had been holding it together for her son until the moment the bus pulled away.)  Then after marveling with some other parents -and an encounter with one bafflingly jubilant neighbor- I went home to desperately commune with my social media community, a sampling of which I present here hopefully for the historical and future benefit of my kids.

2) What coulda, shoulda been:

As we witnessed up close in Philadelphia, the DNC (Democratic National Congress) rigged the game to help ensure Hillary Clinton would become the Democratic nominee, even though Sanders was both more popular AND capable of beating Chump.

3) Fellow grieving Moms & Dads:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-19-55-pmscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-00-40-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-00-45-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-01-28-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-02-00-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-03-13-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-04-50-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-05-32-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-32-25-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-33-39-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-56-32-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-9-39-42-amscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-9-49-52-am

And my personal favorite:screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-18-42-pm

4) Some historical notes:
screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-8-42-43-am

First thing on this morning after last night’s abominable nomination is the STOCK MARKET tanked.                       (“Thanks Obama!”)

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-38-03-pm

The U.K hurt  itself badly this year by inadvertently voting to exit the European Union.  Not to be outdone, here         in the U.S. we played our “Trump” card.  Ugh.

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-18-57-pm

The Obamas (even if we disagree with policies like the wars and fossil fuel) have conducted themselves with nothing but integrity, grace and class.

it-didnt-start-with-gas-chambers

In the late 1930’s an inexplicably horrible dictator (Hitler) came to power and conducted its country through unspeakable atrocities throughout World War II.  (The Holocaust.)

This is especially disturbing because this now president-elect of ours is a BIG FAN (brags of studying Hitler’s playbook, Mein Kampf, for years).

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-35-40-pm

For added irony, this date in 1938 was a particularly sharp point of terror in Hitler’s era.

5) Some folks we may know:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-10-31-09-am

Your Daddy did not             mince words today.

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-35-12-pm

Neither did your Uncle Robert:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-9-36-08-am

Daddy’s cousin Ryan highlights a good point:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-9-40-10-am

Here is one of our own local elected officials (Cambridge School Committee).

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-10-44-16-am

And this from Oakland, my home town:

There are also protests in cities happening all over the country, including over 10,000 in Boston right now as I write.  In fact ClaraJane and I caught a protest march full of angry millennials barreling through Central Square earlier this evening (like a human train ride from the dance studio to the restaurant).  Although we did not chant “FUCK TRUMP! FUCK TRUMP!” we certainly marched in solidarity.  ClaraJane got quite a few high-fives in her ballet tights and tutu.   As we got off at our stop (Middle East Restaurant) I yelled to them, “Great job you guys! Keep your voices up!  YOU ARE THE FUTURE!”  They cheered, and I hope they believed me -and believe in themselves- because it’s true.

6) Moving forward, imperfectly of course:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-10-45-32-am

All is not lost: screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-10-45-28-am

From the most super genius/economist I know (also a juggler, ahem):screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-35-05-pm

From Aunt Sasha:

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-16-26-pm

It’s real kids; YOU ARE THE FUTURE.

Look for the helpers.

look-for-the-helpers

BE the helpers.

How to begin?

Let’s begin here.

Sugar Skulls POOP-Style

Sunday, November 6th 2016

My soul sister Oksana is among other things a spanish teacher originally from Cuba.  Every year she conducts a wonderful celebration of Dia de los Muertos with her students, including the decoration of sugar skulls which they make from scratch.

(See: https://circuskitchen.com/2015/11/01/dia-de-los-muertos/ )

This year she invited my brood over to decorate some with hers, which is great because together these four kids make MAGIC.  Or more specifically, P.O.O.P.  (Their last name begins with P, ours with O… you get the idea.)

 ♥ ♥ The P.O.O.P Kids ♥ ♥

The kids loved it and so did we.  We also viewed this AMAZING 4 minute short capturing the spirit of the holiday (and so should you, after you grab a hanky):

Oksana also recommends this piece by the BBC [18 mins]:

Oksana even let us keep the beautiful bags of merengue-powdered sugar-food coloring paste frosting she’d made, and when we left my son informed me that he “loved” it and the evening was “truly wonderful.”  (Swoon.)

Gavin and ClaraJane could barely contain themselves when it came time to show Daddy; had to fight/negotiate how they were going to do it (“you carry the tray first like this, then I’ll carry it next like that…”).

2016-11-06-19-34

Thank you Oksana and also Lou for having us over.   ♥  ♥  ♥  ♥
