Brand New Congress.org

Sat., February 25th 2017

Today entailed:

A kickoff meeting to organize a Boston-area chapter of Brand New Congress.

80% of Americans agree: Congress is broken. Both major parties have proven time and time again that they are either unwilling or unable to deliver results for the American people. But we have an alternative. We are recruiting and running more than 400 outstanding candidates in a single, unified, national campaign for Congress in 2018. Together, they will pass an aggressive and practical plan to significantly increase wages, remove the influence of big money from our government, and protect the rights of all Americans. Let’s elect a Brand New Congress that will get the job done.

You can read the Brand New Congress plan here:
https://brandnewcongress.org/plan.
If it sounds like a good idea to you, please join our event and like and share our page!

At the meeting we will discuss the BNC platform, how to volunteer, and what our goals and organization for this chapter should be.

That’s it in a nutshell.  God willing.  Although I did not volunteer to do research in trying to identify new candidates, I did sign up to host a “research party.”  We’ll see.

Interestingly, germane to Nadeem Mazen’s earlier point, BNC also raises this question:

Any suggestions?  Do tell!

Saturday’s Activism – Feb 2017

Saturday, February 25th 2017

our-revolution-cambridge

In today’s activism I’m more of a tourist (again).  Free of work and released from my flamly for a few hours I hopped the bus to Harvard Square and landed smack-dab in the middle of a #NODAPL Protest outside TD Bank.

2017-02-25 #NODAPL Action @TD Bank Harvard Square [26 seconds]:

My people!

I hung out long enough to take it in before heading to the Democracy House for this week’s local assembly of OurRevolution.com.

I came in on a discussion of how to elect the type of representatives we want.

The main speaker mentioned he doesn’t know how he feels about being an “Affirmative Action Candidate” because he is Muslim, but for now he’ll take it and try to help the underrepresented as much as possible.

• An impressive man in a wheelchair pointed out that, “What we have now in our representatives are mostly demonic white, cis, strait, non-disabled men.*  I would like to see more representation but I don’t think we can have that without re-imaging of how representatives are elected.”  e.g.; someone with autism who is brilliant but would not be good at knocking on doors; a disabled person with three degrees who doesn’t have many contacts because he lives in section 8 retirement housing.

*[See my post from earlier today.]

Haha, Late-to-the-Party here just realized this speaker is our own beloved City Council Member, Nadeem Mazen!

Worth noting; getting on a ballot requires much smaller numbers than you might thing in the primaries.  It is important to know that electing the type of representatives we want is within our reach.

• Q:  What support does this group provide to its members.  A:  Facilitators, removing barriers, perhaps curating and supporting specific directions.  e.g.: The Indivisible Guide and training people who perhaps have never made a phone call to a representative.   Also!  Nadeem Mazen has an Occupy (?) group that meets on Sundays that offers some opt-in homework action for which you can partner with a buddy to help keep you accountable.

• Q: What made Bernie’s campaign so great.  A: He was interested in  SYSTEMIC change.    And engaged in two-way dialogue with the public to determine what is important.

Nadeem Mazen also expounded his thoughts about WHAT AN ELECTED OFFICIAL SHOULD BE, and earlier he referenced a LITMUS TEST FOR AUTHENTICITY in a candidate.  He spoke beautifully and alluded to more than I could process, so I had the privilege of asking if he had either of these kind of templates available in writing.  He was pleased to say he is in the process of relaunching his website, was video taping this meeting to transcribe and will capture these ideas and share them there.

Pretty badass Nadeem!  I’m happy expecting you indeed to be a man of your word.

After a ton of announcements about various groups and upcoming actions, we finished with a photo shoot rally for Progressive Democrats of America in which I held up a sign saying “HEALTHCARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT.

THEN, risking marital collateral with Dear Hubsand, I *stayed* for the next meeting with BrandNewCongress.org.   (See next post.)

This Land Is Mine – An Animated History of Palestine

Saturday, February 25th 2017

An amazing animated history of the war over what I understand to be the Israel/Palestine territory.  I knew that the conflict goes WAY back in history far before the current two seemingly nihilistic foes, but check out this fascinating summary (which thankfully my DH was able to narrate for me for historical context).

This Land Is Mine [3:31]:

Nice little discussion with the kids about this morning.  (Yes I showed them that.)  One thing I pointed out to my family -withOUT trying to make anyone wrong- was asking what quality ALL those soldiers had in common?

My family were all stumped.

My answer:  They are all MEN.  Throughout history men have been in charge (by using might and oppressing women), and THIS is their idea of CONFLICT RESOLUTION.

What would women do, I asked?  I suggested they would probably start by cleaning and cooking, sitting everyone down to a meal and then facilitate a lively discussion and come up with some solutions that actually benefitted everyone.   Yes it would involve COMPRIMISE.  And yes this is theoretical.

But more and more I am acclimating to the understanding that the future, if there is to be a future… “is FEMALE.”

2017-01-22 18.44.59.jpg

The future is FEMALE

(And no this does not mean the oppression of men.  Even though that is undoubtedly how men in power would perceive having to concede oppression of women and others.)

Winter getaway to invade our friends’ home in New Hampshire!

Erin and Skylar take us for a stunning walk in the woods (during which Daddy dips Gavin’s head in the SNOW).

2017-02-23 21.00.44.jpg

Dinner

Paul leads the kids through rolling sushi for our magnificent feast.  Richard treats us to stories about restaurant hauntings, spicy “food” and emus gone wild.  Marlin performs goopy magic and Gavin and Skylar perform a Robot Dog Dance.

and a Show

Paul boosts our value as guests by replacing lightbulbs, ClaraJane proudly demonstrates her building block designs and Erin’s car displays the name of their family-owned Dojo, Prevail Martial Arts & Fitness Center.

In fact I was so focused on the media from our EPOCH experience with the Women’s March on D.C., we didn’t visit the dojo this time, but I sure hope to in future.

Before heading out, we are treated to a HOT TUB outside in the SUN and SNOW!

After which Daddy performs Snow Angel:

A little more horsing around and our surreptitious Vacation-Invasion is complete.

At Rise: UGH

Thurs. Feb. 23rd 2017

ugh-quotes-quotes-jpg

At Rise:  The O’s are pulled over in the car polishing off some emergency road-side sandwiches.

BOY:  UUUU-GH!!  Can’t we get back on the ROAD already!??!

MOM:  Oh?  You mean, ‘Thanks for the great lunch Mom & Dad, it really hit the spot.  I am ready to hit the road whenever you guys are’  …?

BOY:  [Pause.]  Yeah that’s what I meant.

End Scene.

At Rise: Another Word

Thurs., Feb 23rd 2017

anotherword

At Rise:  The O’s are driving in the car.

MOM:  They should have another word that’s not just for when you’re angry from not having enough access to food.

GIRL IN BACKSEAT (5 y/o): HANGRY!

MOM:  Ya there should be a word for not just when you’re…

DAD:  Tired?

GIRL:  TANGRY!!

MOM:  Yeah, but not just from when you’re angry from not enough access to food or sleep, but when you’re angry from TOO MUCH access to your KIDS.

DAD:  [Pause.] “Parenthood?”

MOM:  [Pause.]  Yes.

BOY IN BACKSEAT (~8 y/o):  I don’t know what you guys are talking about. And I don’t care.

[End Scene.]

At Rise: Not a Democracy

no-democracy

At Rise: Liberal-Ass Mom is lecturing Smart-Ass Son (~8 y/o).

LAM: …This is not a Democracy! When I DISCIPLINE you, with TEACHING, CORRECTING or making a REQUEST, it is your job to RECEIVE, and then use your best judgement.  It is up to you what you think that looks like.  Like NOT throwing something at my HEAD, for example.

SAS: [Pause.]  WOW.  A Democrat not even using Democracy in her own house.

LAM:  [Pause.] [Slow clap.]

End Scene.

A Walk Around the Lake by Olivia

February 22nd 2017

While in Plymouth with family over break my 12 y/o niece Olivia was teaching herself one of my favorite hobbies;  VIDEO EDITING!

After a couple random whimsical productions, she sent me this touching piece about walking her dogs in the woods.  (She also gave me permission to publish it here.)  The score is so good I’m legit jealous, and the pace is so soothing it almost feels like an exercise in mindfulness.

Wonderful choices Olivia!  I love your voice in this piece.  Love, Aunt Jenny  (o:
